When central bankers are free from political considerations, they can honestly evaluate any short- and long-term ramifications of their decisions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;margin-bottom:17px\">So it\u2019s no wonder that central bank autonomy has been such a frequent topic of conversation, especially with new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh now taking office. What is perplexing, Allison Schrager writes, is why those conversations seem to ignore the core part of the issue: the balance sheet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;margin-bottom:17px\">\n\u201cAny country that runs a large debt struggles to maintain an independent central bank, but that task becomes even harder when paired with a large balance sheet,\u201d she explains. \u201cA high debt burden tempts policymakers to inflate away debt or to keep interest rates low in order to reduce debt-service payments. Both are forms of financial repression, and both are enabled by a large balance sheet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/article\/fed-chair-kevin-warsh-independence-balance-sheet?utm_source=virtuous&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=cjdaily\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #00afcf;\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Read more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;margin-bottom:17px\">Last year, New York City recorded 309 murders, the lowest figure since 2018. Shootings are way down, too\u2014at their lowest level, in fact, since 1993.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;margin-bottom:17px\">Assaults, however, have moved in the other direction. The city saw nearly 30,000 of them last year, a 44 percent increase since 2019. The rise \u201cappears to be driven not by serious gun violence committed by a small cohort of repeat offenders,\u201d Charles Fain Lehman writes, \u201cbut rather by more marginal ones\u2014men beating their partners, individuals attacking bus drivers or police, and other low-level acts of physical aggression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/article\/new-york-citys-other-violent-crime-problem?utm_source=virtuous&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=cjdaily\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #00afcf;\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Read more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;margin-bottom:17px\">\nThe Trump administration is enacting targeted caps on graduate student borrowing, but critics misunderstand the policy\u2019s benefits. Some colleges and universities have already adapted to the intended caps by cutting tuition, which is exactly what the policy intends to achieve. Systematic declines in higher education costs are unheard of in recent years, but targeted caps on borrowing may be an efficient way to make college more affordable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;margin-bottom:17px\">\n\u201cCritics are nitpicking around the edges and failing to understand how these policies could make graduate programs more reasonably priced in the future,\u201d writes Manhattan Institute Paulson Policy Analyst Neetu Arnold. \u201cStudents who struggle to access programs because of cost should blame the graduate programs that fail to adapt to the caps\u2014not the Trump administration for trying to rein in costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0\">\nRead more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/article\/graduate-student-loans-borrowing-caps?utm_source=virtuous&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=cjdaily\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #00afcf;\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/article\/zohran-mamdani-budget-taxes-unions-welfare?utm_source=virtuous&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=cjdaily\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/0526 CJ Daily.png\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;border:0;width:100%\" width=\"600\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" height=\"auto\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;margin-bottom:17px\">\n\u201cOur time is defined by plummeting trust in institutions,\u201d writes Carolyn D. Gorman. \u201cOur posture toward institutions has changed, too: we use them but no longer serve them, forgoing any sense of institutional stewardship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;margin-bottom:17px\">\nFor an antidote to that trend, Gorman recommends reading Lamar Alexander\u2019s new memoir, The Education of a Senator. She describes how the former Tennessee governor and senator compiled a track record that places him \u201cin the tradition of legislators who treated public office as something larger than themselves, defined by unique processes and procedures that they felt duty-bound to defend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;margin-bottom:17px\">\nHow should leaders cultivate such stewardship? \u201cAlexander\u2019s memoir suggests that one should take an interest in institutions\u2019 history\u2014their rules, norms, and the people who built them,\u201d Gorman writes. \u201cThat exercise imparts a sense of gratitude.
