Nuclear power generation is again recognized for its importance around the world today. This is because the two ideological camps are in conflict to take over a new technological hegemony called artificial intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n

In this regard, it is hard to say that Charles Oppenheimer, the grandson of Robert Oppenheimer, has come to the fore to revive the U.S. nuclear power market. Having majored in international relations at university and built his career in Silicon Valley, USA, he founded a startup “Oppenheimer Energy Ventures” in 2023. Under the banner of “using business means to respond to existential crises of nuclear weapons and climate change,” it is to carry out nuclear power development projects in the United States. Oppenheimer explained that the atmosphere of the nuclear power plant market in the U.S. has changed significantly since May last year. This is as U.S. President Donald Trump declared four executive orders to ease regulations on nuclear power generation safety. As a result, the number of large nuclear power plants is expected to increase rapidly in the U.S. market in the future.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, construction of nuclear power plants remains difficult in the United States. This is because it is difficult to raise funds to be invested in nuclear power plant construction projects. In the current U.S. power market, private utility companies, which are usually power buyers, finance power generation projects. If the construction of the power plant is delayed, additional costs are incurred, or if the price of electricity falls suddenly, the investor will bear the burden entirely.<\/p>\n

This is why it is important to create a structure in which the burden of the project can be shared by multiple stakeholders. “The power company should not be the only buyer or risk-taker of the project,” Oppenheimer said. “The solution is to create a special purpose corporation (SPC) by gathering experts, Korean investors, design, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies, and tech companies (consumers) and power companies.” Oppenheimer Energy Ventures, which he founded, will be in charge of project development in the process.<\/p>\n

He predicted that the revival of the U.S. nuclear power market would be a great opportunity for Korea. “Korea has the world’s best reputation in the nuclear power plant sector,” Oppenheimer said. “Over time, we have lowered the cost of building nuclear power plants and successfully exported the Baraka nuclear power plant project in the United Arab Emirates.” Specifically, he mentioned how to become a financial investor (FI) for a nuclear power plant project or participate as an EPC supplier to increase EPC capabilities in the United States, and how to supply equipment in nuclear power plants.<\/p>\n

With 25 years of experience in technology and software, he said he wants to apply the way he builds his business in Silicon Valley to the nuclear energy market.
