{"id":245339,"date":"2026-05-27T17:38:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T17:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/245339\/"},"modified":"2026-05-27T17:38:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T17:38:08","slug":"bronx-zoo-celebrates-birth-of-worlds-last-truly-wild-horse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/245339\/","title":{"rendered":"Bronx Zoo celebrates birth of world&#8217;s last &#8216;truly wild&#8217; horse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On April 21, the Bronx Zoo welcomed a new foal to its herd of endangered Przewalski\u2019s horses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis foal is wildlife conservation in action \u2014 fewer than 2,000 Przewalski&#8217;s horses exist globally,\u201d a media contact said on behalf of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Wildlife Conservation Society<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Przewalski\u2019s horse (pronounced \u201cshuh-VAL-skees\u201d) is widely considered to be the world\u2019s last \u201ctruly wild\u201d horse, having diverged from the domestic horse over 5,000 years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Compared to typical horses, Przewalski&#8217;s horses are small and stocky, with a large head, thick neck, and short legs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition to their dusky brown coat, they have yellowish-white bellies, dark legs, and stripes behind their knees. Eventually, they could only be found in the Mongolian steppes of the Gobi Desert.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By 1969, the Przewalski&#8217;s horse was officially declared extinct in the wild. At that point, conservation efforts turned to captive breeding efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough breeding programs aimed at maintaining a genetically diverse population of the species and through reintroduction efforts, zoo-bred Przewalski\u2019s horses were successfully returned to their native grasslands in China in 1989 and in Mongolia beginning in 1992,\u201d The WCS said <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.wcs.org\/News-Releases\/articleType\/ArticleView\/articleId\/26231\/Bronx-Zoo-Announces-Birth-of-Endangered-Przewalskis-Foal.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in a press release<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today, all Przewalski&#8217;s horses \u2014 including the one just born at the Bronx Zoo \u2014 are descended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneearth.org\/species-of-the-week-przewalskis-horse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">from just 14 individuals<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bronx Zoo has played a pivotal role in the conservation of the Przewalski&#8217;s horse, also known as the Mongolian wild horse,\u201d the WCS said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Bronx Zoo has been raising Przewalski&#8217;s horses for years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A Przewalski's horse foal frolicks in a sanctuary\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/6a172818a514ced5b6122ffb_horse-frolicking.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Image via WCS \/ Terria Clay<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe birth of an animal that was once extinct in the wild is a cause for celebration!\u201d the Bronx Zoo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bronxzoo\/posts\/the-birth-of-an-animal-that-was-once-extinct-in-the-wild-is-a-cause-for-celebrat\/10158731554878314\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">shared on Facebook<\/a> when an earlier foal was born in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But captive breeding is just one part of the species\u2019 conservation plan \u2014 the other vital step is reintroduction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodgoodgood.co\/articles\/wild-przewalski-horses-endangered-conservation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">three Przewalski\u2019s horses (named Zorro, Zeta II, and Ypsilon) traveled 3,000 miles<\/a>, by truck and plane, from the Prague Zoo in Czechia to the Altyn Dala reserve in the Kazakh Steppe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They were the first of 40 horses to join the reserve.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been waiting for this moment for a very long time,\u201d Albert Salemgareyev from the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity in Kazakhstan <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2024-06-wild-horse-species-kazakh-steppes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told AFP<\/a> in 2024. \u201cA lot of work has been carried out in recent months in order for the Przewalski horses to come to Kazakhstan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to strengthening the horse\u2019s population, conservationists hoped that the reintroduction would also restore the steppe ecosystem. The horses spread seeds, graze vegetation, and play an important role in maintaining biodiversity across the grasslands.<\/p>\n<p>For now, the horses are living in protected areas where veterinarians and researchers can continue monitoring their health and behavior.
