The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY<\/a>) has condemned recent vandalism targeting a Kosher bagel shop in Jamaica Estates<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The NYPD is investigating a potential hate crime after CCTV footage showed an unidentified vandal throwing a number of objects toward Bagels & Company, an Israeli-owned store located in Jamaica Estates.<\/p>\n

The incident, which took place at around 1 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, lasted for around five minutes while the suspect hurled plants, chairs and tables at the building.\n<\/p>\n

The suspect caused $800 worth of damage at the property, breaking eight flower pots, according to the NYPD. The individual did not interact with anyone, the police added.\n<\/p>\n

It appears that the suspect is wearing a traditional Muslim garment known as a thobe, according to footage of the incident posted on social media.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher strongly condemned the incident and called for a full police investigation.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe urge community leaders, elected officials, and residents to reject antisemitism and all other forms of bigotry,\u201d Nasher said in a statement. \u201cLaw enforcement authorities should conduct a thorough investigation and hold anyone responsible accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nasher added that CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community \u201cstands in solidarity\u201d with victims of antisemitism, anti-black racism, Islamophobia and all other forms of bigotry.\n<\/p>\n

QNS has attempted to reach Bagels & Company on several occasions.\n<\/p>\n

The attack comes after a wave of antisemitic incidents across the borough, including a spate of attacks at the beginning of the month that saw four teenagers deface several Jewish properties with swastikas in Forest Hills.<\/p>\n

Elected officials and Jewish community leaders gathered on May 5 at Congregation Machane Chodosh, an orthodox synagogue located at 67-29 108th St. was targeted in the attacks, to denounce a rise in antisemitism across the city. During the antisemitic attacks in early May, the teens vandalized the synagogue\u2019s memorial dedicated to the victims of Kristallnacht, an anti-Jewish pogrom carried out by the Nazis in 1938.<\/p>\n

According to recent city statistics, antisemitism accounted for 60% of all hate crimes reported to the police in April 2026. Reports of antisemitic hate crimes dropped by 30% compared to April 2025, according to the police, dropping from 43 reported incidents last year to 30 this year.<\/p>\n

However, the Anti Defamation League asserted that New York still leads the nation in antisemitic hate crimes, pointing to a reported 1,160 incidents that took place in 2025. That marked a 19% decline from 2024 but more than double the reported incidents from 2022.<\/p>\n
