{"id":245654,"date":"2026-05-27T22:00:37","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T22:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/245654\/"},"modified":"2026-05-27T22:00:37","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T22:00:37","slug":"news-12-brooklyn-mother-of-teen-killed-subway-surfing-joins-nypd-to-stop-deadly-trend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/245654\/","title":{"rendered":"News 12 | Brooklyn | Mother Of Teen Killed Subway Surfing Joins Nypd To Stop Deadly Trend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">A mother whose teenage son was killed while subway surfing is joining forces with the NYPD in an effort to <a data-rich-text-hyperlink=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/brooklyn.news12.com\/lawsuit-holding-social-media-giants-liable-for-subway-surfing-deaths-moves-forward\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prevent more deaths tied to the dangerous trend.<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Norma Nazario\u2019s son, Zachery, died in 2023 after <a data-rich-text-hyperlink=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/brooklyn.news12.com\/teen-dead-another-critically-injured-in-williamsburg-bridge-subway-surfing-incident\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">riding on top of a train on the Williamsburg Bridge. <\/a><\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Now, she is partnering with the NYPD\u2019s Transit Bureau&#8217;s outreach efforts to parents, teens and schools.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cTeachers used to call him the historian because he loved history,\u201d Nazario said. \u201cI miss him a lot. This is why I\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Her involvement comes days after a 14-year-old boy was killed while riding on top of a train on the Williamsburg Bridge.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">NYPD Transit Chief Joseph M. Gulotta said the department has intensified its crackdown, deploying drones and closely monitoring known hot spots.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cIf we can save even one kid, we\u2019ve done good,\u201d Gulotta said.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">So far this year, police have arrested 83 young people for riding on top of or behind trains, or attempting to do so, according to the NYPD. Six of those arrests happened in a single day this week, including three on the Williamsburg Bridge, where the teen was killed on Friday.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Chief Gulotta said repeat offenders remain a major concern.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cIt\u2019s over 60 repeat offenders as we\u2019ve been tracking over the last five years,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Police are urging riders to call 911 if they witness subway surfing, saying those reports help identify problem areas.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cWe do get calls for subway surfing every day,\u201d Gulotta said. \u201cKeep calling, because that data is important to us.
