Throwing cold water on an Iranian state broadcaster\u2019s report about a preliminary peace deal, President Trump signaled during a cabinet meeting today that he was open to lengthy negotiations<\/a> with Iran, despite domestic pressure. Iranian officials \u201cthought they were going to outwait me,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cI don\u2019t care about the midterms.\u201d<\/p>\n

The reported draft deal, which the White House dismissed as a \u201ccomplete fabrication,\u201d had terms including<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial marine traffic.<\/p>\n

The U.S. would lift its naval blockade and withdraw an unspecified number of military forces \u201cfrom the areas surrounding Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran would manage the strait in cooperation with Oman, a U.S. ally.<\/p>\n

Strait traffic would return to prewar levels within a month.<\/p>\n

The report focused on the waterway, whose closure has strained global oil and gas supplies<\/a>, but included no reference to Iran\u2019s uranium stockpile or its frozen assets<\/a> \u2014 important sticking points that remain largely unresolved.<\/p>\n

In today\u2019s cabinet meeting, Trump said of the strait: \u201cNobody\u2019s going to control it; we\u2019re going to watch over it.\u201d He also warned Oman not to enter into any agreement with Iran<\/a> to share control of the strait, or else face an American bombing campaign.<\/p>\n

Administration is overpaying reflecting-pool renovators<\/p>\n

To paint Washington\u2019s reflecting pool \u201cAmerican flag blue,\u201d Trump gave out a $13.1 million no-bid government contract to a firm he said had worked on his swimming pools. Now, the National Park Service\u2019s own analysis has found that the president\u2019s handpicked firm is being paid an excessive amount<\/a>, according to federal documents first reported today by The Times.<\/p>\n

The typical profit margin for such projects is 6 to 12 percent, internal records show; the firm is collecting 20 percent. Other documents indicate that the same contractor \u2014 at least initially \u2014 was not able to perform one of the most important parts of its job: sealing the gaps between concrete slabs on the pool\u2019s floor. Republicans seethe after Cornyn\u2019s loss<\/p>\n

The Trump-backed, scandal-racked Texas attorney general Ken Paxton handily defeated the four-term senator John Cornyn in Texas last night. That puts Cornyn\u2019s colleagues, already angry<\/a> with Trump, in a weird spot.<\/p>\n

Senate Republicans spent nearly $100 million to defend Cornyn, who is popular in the chamber, and now fear they will need to divert millions from other tough races to prop up Paxton, who has faced investigation, indictment, impeachment and a messy public divorce.<\/p>\n

That may give them more reasons to defy Trump<\/a> in the critical months before the midterm elections. They already have resisted disbursing money for the president\u2019s ballroom and for a $1.8 billion fund<\/a> likely to benefit his allies.<\/p>\n
