(NewsNation) — A New York City-based grocery store on Tuesday passed a vote to boycott Israeli products.

The decision by the Park Slope Food Coop comes after members voiced their dismay over Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. The vote was approved with 67% in favor, 31% against and 2% abstaining.

“Voting ‘yes’ on this boycott is voting against genocide, voting against apartheid and voting ‘yes’ to getting our co-op back on the right side of history,” Alyce Barr told the New York Times. Barr led the boycott campaign and has been a member of the co-op since 1978.

The possibility that the co-op would join the boycott escalated tensions in April, leading to an outburst at a meeting, according to the New York Post. The incident also involved accusations against Jewish members, saying they supported genocide.

“The co-op used to feel like Brooklyn’s living room; now, every meeting feels like Judgment Day at noon,” Park Slope Food Coop member Ramon Maislen told the New York Post.

Maislen’s remarks reflected the large turnout for the vote meeting, which included 7,000 of the coop’s 15,000 members. He acknowledged the last Israeli boycott vote in 2012 drew only 2,000 attendees, reports said.

Following the boycott’s approval, Joseph Szladek, the co-op’s general manager, told the The New York Times that most of the paid staff wanted the boycott put to a referendum rather than voted on at a meeting.

The store’s ban will apply to a small number of products produced in Israel and Israeli products made in the occupied Palestinian territories until Israel abides by international law, according to reports. The products include produce, tahini brands, olive oil and hair care products.

The Park Slope Food Coop has existed since 1973.
