The New York Yankees have been one of the best teams in baseball throughout the 2026 season. Their success has been fueled by a dominant starting rotation, a powerful middle of the batting order, and enough depth to overcome stretches of inconsistency. Recently, even the bottom half of the lineup has started to show signs of improvement.

There is one position, however, where the Yankees continue to get almost no offensive production: catcher. If New York is serious about making a deep postseason run, finding help behind the plate should be one of the front office’s top priorities before the trade deadline.

""Austin Wells Has Become a Major Concern

Coming into the season, the Yankees expected Austin Wells to continue building on what appeared to be a breakout campaign in 2025. Instead, the young catcher has struggled from Opening Day onward.

Through the first portion of the season, Wells is hitting just .176 with a .288 on-base percentage and a .275 slugging percentage. Even more concerning is the lack of impact production. After hitting 21 home runs and driving in 71 runs last season, Wells has managed only four home runs and seven RBIs this year.

Those numbers simply are not good enough for a team with championship aspirations. At some point, the Yankees have to stop waiting for a turnaround and start exploring alternatives.

The Left-Handed Pitching Problem

Wells’ struggles become even more problematic when facing left-handed pitching.

His offensive production against southpaws has been among the weakest on the roster, creating a difficult situation for manager Aaron Boone when constructing lineups.

At a minimum, the Yankees should be searching for a right-handed-hitting catcher who can form a platoon and provide better production in those matchups. That move alone would immediately improve the lineup’s balance.

""A Bigger Move May Be Necessary

The more aggressive option would be acquiring an entirely new everyday catcher. While that may seem drastic, contenders cannot afford to carry a black hole in the lineup for six months and expect it not to matter in October.

The Yankees have received elite production from key players throughout the roster, but postseason baseball often comes down to exploiting weaknesses. Right now, catcher is clearly New York’s biggest offensive weakness.

If the Yankees want to maximize their World Series chances, the trade market may hold the solution. Waiting much longer could be a mistake.
