Tutty’s Broadway debut is a masterclass of comedic timing and dramatic beats that earned the actor a Tony nomination—one of eight for the show overall.

Tutty’s character, Dougal, who’s just arrived in New York and has the wide eyes of a newcomer, ricochets through scenes with chaotic charm, romantic desperation, and enough nervous energy to power the lights of Times Square. But according to Tutty, the show’s most important moments happen when the laughter stops entirely. “A pause between two people can be louder than any big number,” he says. “You feel the audience leaning in.”

The production follows Dougal and Robin (Christiani Pitts), two strangers brought together by the wedding of Dougal’s father and Robin’s sister. The pair seemingly couldn’t be more different, with Dougal’s quick British wit and infatuation with the Big Apple clashing against Robin’s seen-it-all, native New Yorker cool.

“We spend the first half of the show setting up every reason why these people shouldn’t be together,” Tutty says. But like all romantic comedies, forced proximity and unforeseen circumstances make them see one another in a new light.

Matthew Murphy

Sam Tutty and Christiani Pitts star in the new musical Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).

Tutty cites classic romantic comedies like When Harry Met Sally… and Serendipity as touchstones for the production’s pacing and emotional structure. “The audience hates being given the answer,” he explains. “Don’t give them four—give them two plus two.” Rather than relying on instant chemistry or sweeping declarations, the show carefully layers emotional “breadcrumbs” throughout the evening, allowing audiences to slowly discover the connection alongside the characters themselves.

That emotional payoff, however, only works because of the production’s balance between spectacle and stillness. For much of the show, Dougal operates at full speed—a “puppy in a china shop,” as Tutty affectionately describes him—rattling through New York with relentless enthusiasm. Yet underneath the comedy lies a character desperately trying to outrun deeper emotional wounds.

“There’s this huge juxtaposition with him,” Tutty says. “He’s this erratic hurricane for about the first 25 minutes, and then he starts focusing less on his dad and more on Robin. Within that there is calmness.”

Matthew Murphy

The show has been nominated for eight Tony Awards, including a Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical nod for Tutty.

As Dougal begins lowering his guard, the show seems to slow down with him. Tutty points to several quieter scenes between the two leads as his favorites to perform, particularly moments where the pair simply sit and talk without distraction or performance. “Those scenes are really fun because it’s sort of the only few moments where there’s not a performance happening,” he says. “It’s just two people uncovering each other emotionally.”

In an era increasingly shaped by short attention spans and second-screen viewing, Two Strangers trusts its audience to listen carefully. “You can’t doom-scroll your way through this show,” Tutty says. “People have to really listen. They have to remember things.”

Audiences, in turn, seem eager to do exactly that. Since transferring to Broadway from London’s West End, the production has developed a passionate fanbase, particularly among young theatergoers and romantics drawn to its hopeful depiction of modern connection. Tutty says some of the most memorable moments happen after the curtain falls, when audience members gather at the stage door.

“We’ve had people come alone and leave with friends,” he says. “That’s the beauty of theater.”

Matthew Murphy

Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) is on Broadway now at the Longacre Theatre.

The phenomenon feels especially fitting for a musical centered around strangers finding connection in an overwhelming city. Though Robin initially views New York with exhaustion and cynicism, Dougal sees endless possibility in every subway ride and street corner: a perspective that, according to Tutty, audiences often rediscover through the show itself.

“You can’t constantly romanticize New York,” he says candidly. “It’s emotionally exhausting.” Still, performing the show night after night has given him a renewed appreciation for the city’s magic. “Doing the show every night sort of reignites that passion.”

Night after night, somewhere between the comedy, chaos, and carefully placed pauses, Two Strangers offers audiences something increasingly rare: sincerity. And in the middle of it all, Tutty has discovered that the loudest moments onstage are often the quietest ones.

Carly Witteman is Town & Country’s Associate Fashion Editor, covering luxury style, jewelry and timepieces, beauty, and arts and culture while styling various photoshoots and projects for print.
