A Long Island beach is marking what would have been Marilyn Monroe\u2019s <\/a>100th birthday Monday with a special tribute to celebrate the iconic 1949 photo shoot there that kick-started her career.<\/p>\n

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joe Saladino unveiled a plaque Friday at Tobay Beach commemorating the Hollywood legend\u2019s iconic stop on Long Island.<\/p>\n

\u201cTobay Beach wasn\u2019t just a quiet escape; it was the place where a legend was<\/a> launched,\u201d the special plaque reads.<\/p>\n

Saladino, standing near where the gorgeous then-23-year-old<\/a> posed in a sexy swimsuit with an umbrella, said Monroe \u201cvisited New York City and was looking to catapult her career.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to forever memorialize this iconic moment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Photographer Andr\u00e9 de Dienes chose the Nassau County shore \u201cto capture her youth, her beauty and her great personality\u201d at a time that the Los Angeles native \u201cwas just starting and getting some minor film roles,\u201d Saladino said.<\/p>\n

Monroe, who at the time was still Norma Jean Mortenson<\/a>, declared, \u201cLet\u2019s make history!\u201d in front of the Atlantic Ocean\u2019s crashing waves \u2014 and soon made good on her vow.<\/p>\n

\u201cHollywood Studios quickly took notice,\u201d Saladino said of the star\u2019s meteoric rise in the 1950s.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey looked at her youthfulness, her innocence, vulnerability, and her effortless beauty came across vividly through the camera lens.\u201d<\/p>\n
