{"id":253344,"date":"2026-06-03T06:27:15","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T06:27:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/253344\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T06:27:15","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T06:27:15","slug":"supreme-court-greenlights-alabamas-gop-friendly-redistricting-effort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/253344\/","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court greenlights Alabama&#8217;s GOP-friendly redistricting effort"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed Alabama to move forward with a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/11\/us-news\/supreme-court-allows-alabama-to-redraw-congressional-maps-before-2026-midterms\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plan to implement a new congressional map<\/a> \u2014 boosting Republicans ahead of the November midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p>The new map is expected to give Republicans an extra seat in the state\u2019s delegation \u2014 further adding to the GOP\u2019s gains in a nationwide redistricting war.<br \/>The court\u2019s six conservative justices <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/26\/us-news\/federal-appeals-court-blocks-tainted-gop-drawn-alabama-congressional-map\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">granted Alabama\u2019s emergency appeal<\/a> of a lower court order that ruled the map drawn by the legislature in 2023 intentionally discriminated against black residents.<br \/>Alabama\u2019s new map will give Republicans an advantage in one of the state\u2019s two Democrat-controlled congressional districts.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39563291\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/alabama-state-capitol-seen-special-127007513.jpg\" alt=\"Aerial view of the Alabama State Capitol building in Montgomery.\" class=\"wp-image-39563291\"  \/>The Alabama state capitol is seen during a special session of the Alabama Legislature, Monday, May 4, 2026, in Montgomery, Ala. AP<\/p>\n<p>Justice Sonia Sotomayor, joined by Elena Kagan and Ketanji Jackson, wrote in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/25pdf\/25a1314_7m58.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">her dissent<\/a>\u00a0that the ruling could unleash \u201ca chaotic election, held under a never-before-used congressional map that intentionally discriminates against Black Alabamians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court in April ruled that Louisiana\u2019s second black-majority congressional district, held by a Democrat, was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander, setting in motion further redistricting efforts in the Deep South.<\/p>\n<p>The Louisiana ruling established new guidelines for considering race, decreeing that majority-minority districts should be drawn only if the racial group is large and compact, politically cohesive and facing en-bloc hostility from voters from the state\u2019s majority.<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee is also eliminating a majority-black district centered on Memphis, though that district\u2019s retiring Democrat, Rep. Steve Cohen, is white.
