Hern\u00e1ndez tied the hosting job to his early comedy years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started doing comedy 10 years ago, in Cleveland, Ohio, and I would take the train 12 hours to New York to sell comedy tickets on the street in Greenwich Village in exchange for stage time,\u201d Hern\u00e1ndez said in ESPN\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n
He added, \u201cIt is an honor, and frankly feels crazy to be hosting the ESPYS this year in New York. I\u2019m sure the energy is going to be great.\u201d<\/p>\n
ESPN Pointed to His Comedy and Sports Background<\/p>\n
Craig Lazarus, ESPN vice president and executive producer of the ESPYS, called Hern\u00e1ndez \u201cone of the most electric young comedians\u201d working today.<\/p>\n
Lazarus also said Hern\u00e1ndez\u2019s sports interest and New York ties made him a natural fit for this year\u2019s show.<\/p>\n

ESPN noted that Hern\u00e1ndez played college soccer at John Carroll University. That gives the choice a sports connection beyond his comedy work.<\/p>\n
The Job Comes After a Bigger SNL Run<\/p>\n
Hern\u00e1ndez joined Saturday Night Live in 2022 and has become one of the show\u2019s most visible younger cast members.<\/p>\n
ESPN pointed to his SNL work in sketches including \u201cProtective Mom,\u201d \u201cImmigrant Dad Talk Show,\u201d the \u201cDomingo\u201d series, and appearances on \u201cWeekend Update.\u201d<\/p>\n
The announcement also noted that his Netflix special, Marcello Hern\u00e1ndez: American Boy, premiered in January 2026 and reached the platform\u2019s global Top 10.<\/p>\n
The ESPYS Still Support the V Foundation<\/p>\n
The ESPYS began in 1993 and have long been tied to the V Foundation for Cancer Research, which ESPN founded with the late Jim Valvano.<\/p>\n

ESPN said the show has helped raise more than $292 million for the foundation over more than 30 years.<\/p>\n
Hern\u00e1ndez follows Shane Gillis, who hosted the 2025 ESPYS from Los Angeles.
