A New York City man is accused of aggravated assault in a suspected knife attack outside a convenience store on the Jersey Shore over Memorial Day weekend.<\/p>\n
Margate police arrested Disney Abreu, 33, on May 24 after the altercation in the Wawa parking lot on Ventnor Avenue, Capt. Joseph Scullion said.<\/p>\n
Abreu, a resident of the Bronx, faces one count of second-degree aggravated assault, according to a criminal complaint.<\/p>\n
Holly Bitters, a public defender who represented Abreu during a recent court hearing, could not be reached for comment on the case.<\/p>\n
The victim was a 32-year-old man staying in Longport, which shares a border with Margate, Scullion said.<\/p>\n
The victim Abreu allegedly assaulted was treated at a hospital for a 6-inch laceration on the left side of his face, which extended from the cheek to the ear, an affidavit of probable cause states.<\/p>\n
Officers combed the parking lot for a weapon, but none was found, Scullion said. The depth of the injury suggested it had been caused by a sharp blade, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe injury didn\u2019t look like it just came from a fist, or nails or anything like that,\u201d Scullion said. \u201cIt was more consistent with a slicing of some sort.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe victim also stated that he saw the defendant holding something in his hand like a knife, and that he also made a statement like \u2018I\u2019m going to cut you,\u2019\u201d Scullion added.<\/p>\n
The victim allegedly identified Abreu\u2019s vehicle after Abreu fled the parking lot.<\/p>\n
After being pulled over by the police, Abreu admitted to being involved in the fight, the affidavit states.<\/p>\n
The fight stemmed from an argument between the victim and Abreu\u2019s wife in the parking lot, Scullion said. Abreu allegedly tried to de-escalate the dispute, but the fight ensued, he added.<\/p>\n
