With the Democratic primary just weeks away, Rep. Adriano Espaillat is making his case to voters as he seeks a sixth term representing New York’s 13th Congressional District.<\/p>\n
Espaillat, who has represented parts of northern Manhattan and the Bronx since 2017, says his deep ties to the district set him apart.<\/p>\n
“I know the streets. I know the neighborhoods and buildings,” he told News 12. “I know where there needs to be better public safety.”<\/p>\n
The congressman, who became the first Dominican American and first formerly undocumented immigrant elected to Congress, said one of his proudest accomplishments was helping secure in-state tuition rates for immigrant students attending CUNY. He also pointed to protections for delivery drivers and home-based day care providers.<\/p>\n
Looking ahead, Espaillat said his priorities include immigration, affordability and bringing jobs to the district through projects like the Second Avenue Subway expansion and the Kingsbridge Armory redevelopment.<\/p>\n
The race recently gained attention after Mayor Zohran Mamdani endorsed Espaillat’s opponent, Democratic Socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier. <\/p>\n
When asked if he was surprised by the endorsement, Espaillat responded, “Nothing surprises me in politics. But it’s his decision to make, and we all respect it.”<\/p>\n
Espaillat said his focus remains on voters and the communities he represents.<\/p>\n
“I fought hard to get a seat at the table for the district that I represent, and I will continue to represent them in the best way that I can,” Espaillat said.<\/p>\n
