Samaritan Daytop Village today held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open Binky\u2019s Backyard, a new playground and community space that will serve more than 325 families, including nearly 600 children, at Gloria\u2019s House Family Transitional Residence (Gloria\u2019s House) in the Bronx. Gloria\u2019s House is operated in partnership between Samaritan Daytop Village and the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS). The event also included the unveiling of a mural honoring Gloria Binkowitz, former Director of Family Services and staff member for over 30 years, for whom the residence and playground are named.<\/p>\n
For many of the families living at Gloria\u2019s House, this playground will provide access to safe and engaging outdoor space that has otherwise been limited. For children, having a place to play safely is essential to healthy development; it relieves stress, builds confidence, and provides the opportunity to experience the joys of being a kid, even during uncertain times. For parents, it offers a space to connect, support their children, and begin to rebuild routines that are often disrupted during periods of housing instability.<\/p>\n
This playground was made possible through a $170,000 grant from Lowe\u2019s Hometowns initiative, and the efforts of Lowe\u2019s Red Vest associates and community volunteers, who helped Samaritan staff transform the once-empty lot into a vibrant outdoor space.<\/p>\n

Across its transitional housing programs, Samaritan Daytop Village supports thousands of New Yorkers each year as they move toward permanent housing, with more than 800 individuals and families annually securing long-term housing.<\/p>\n
