The 79th Tony Awards have arrived after a year of shrinkflation<\/a>, as Helen Shaw, our chief theater critic put it. Just 11 musicals<\/a>, both new and revivals, opened this season, compared to 21 in the previous year. Still, the slate of offerings also amounted to an \u201cembarrassment of riches,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

There was a glittering array of scene-stealing moments<\/a> in this year\u2019s shows. And productions keep getting starrier as they bet on celebrities to boost ticket sales, both onstage<\/a> and behind the scenes as co-producers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The ceremony, which will be hosted by the pop singer-songwriter Pink, kicks off at 8 p.m. at Radio City Music Hall. The show will be broadcast live on CBS and is available to stream on Paramount+. Several awards were announced at a preshow ceremony on Pluto TV, hosted by Laura Benanti<\/a>, who won a Tony Award in the 2008 revival of \u201cGypsy,\u201d and Tituss Burgess<\/a>, who last year played Mary Todd Lincoln in \u201cOh, Mary!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Lost Boys\u201d and \u201cSchmigadoon!\u201d \u2014 both new musicals \u2014 lead the pack with 12 nominations apiece, and a revival of \u201cRagtime\u201d is close behind with 11. In the play categories, \u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d leads with nine nods, and \u201cOedipus\u201d has seven. Expect live musical numbers from all of the nominees for best musical and best musical revival, along with a tribute to \u201cA Chorus Line\u201d by Rachel Zegler and a performance by Leslie Odom Jr. in honor of the 30th anniversary of \u201cRent.\u201d<\/p>\n
