I\u2019ve also had quite a few friends mention how surprised they\u2019ve been to find that I\u2019m actually a competent, happy mum. Although well-meaning, I\u2019m sure that\u2019s because I\u2019m quite an assertive, extroverted person \u2013 something that we don\u2019t, for some reason, associate with mothers. Williams has spent her whole career being accused of aggression; to my mind, she\u2019s the antidote we desperately need to this idea of mums always having to be soft and compliant. Yes, we\u2019re there to soothe our kids and be that buffer between them and the outside world.
