The Rose Bowl Fountain in Queen\u2019s Gardens has been vandalised, just days after the gardens were reopened to the public after a \u00a321m project to transform the city centre\u2019s most important green space.<\/p>\n
Hull City Council said the fountain has been switched off while repairs are carried out.<\/p>\n
The incident happened over the late-May\u00a0bank\u00a0holiday,\u00a0when entry was forced entry into the fountain\u2019s control room and \u201csignificant damage\u201d\u00a0was caused to operating\u00a0equipment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
As a result, the\u00a0electronic\u00a0system\u00a0that controls the fountain\u00a0requires reprogramming. Alongside\u00a0this the fountain needs\u00a0draining and cleaning before it can safely be brought back into operation, the council said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Repair work is now underway in partnership with local specialist The Water Feature Company.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Councillor Mark Ieronimo, the council\u2019s portfolio holder\u00a0for\u00a0transport and infrastructure, said: \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0incredibly disappointing to see\u00a0the Rose Bowl\u00a0Fountain\u00a0targeted in this way, especially\u00a0during the opening week of\u00a0Queen\u2019s Gardens.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThis kind of reckless and irresponsible behaviour is completely unacceptable.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0not only resulted in the damage of a much-loved feature, but it is also going to cost taxpayer money to\u00a0repair and\u00a0clean\u00a0\u2013 which could be better spent elsewhere.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Rose Bowl fountain is a key part of Queen\u2019s\u00a0Gardens,\u00a0and\u00a0we know many residents and visitors\u00a0who are\u00a0visiting will\u00a0be\u00a0disappointed\u00a0to see it switched off.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u00a0are working hard to repair the damage and get the\u00a0fountain\u00a0up and running\u00a0as soon as possible so everyone can enjoy it again.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe appreciate everyone\u2019s patience and understanding while the issue is being resolved and\u00a0urge anyone with information about this incident to come forward.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The council is working closely with Humberside Police to\u00a0identify\u00a0those responsible and urges anyone who\u00a0witnessed\u00a0the incident to call 101, quoting crime reference number\u00a026000076036.<\/p>\n
