By: Zach Lewis<\/a><\/p>\nUTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) — A new study shows the Empire State Trail is driving economic, health and environmental benefits across New York.<\/p>\n
According to the report, the 750-mile trail\u2014which includes the Mohawk Valley\u2014 attracts 9.75 million visits each year, generating $1.87 billion in economic activity, supporting 9,680 jobs and producing $640.9 million in employee earnings.<\/p>\n
The trail also brings in $206 million in annual State and local tax revenue.<\/p>\n
The Empire State Trail stretches from New York City north to Canada and from Albany west to Buffalo, making it the nation\u2019s longest multi-use trail network, according to Parks and Trails New York (PTNY).<\/p>\n
The report stated that “every $1 invested in the Empire State Trail generates $5.43 in sales revenue, with off-road trail segments producing four times the economic impact of on-road segments. Each off-road mile contributes $3.9 million in annual economic output while also supporting local jobs and tax revenues.”<\/p>\n
The Erie Canalway Trail sees 3.7 million visits a year and delivers an annual economic impact of about $687.4 million.<\/p>\n
“The trail supports 3,555 jobs, providing more than $235 million in total employee earnings and generating nearly $75.4 million in state and local tax revenue to the State and local municipalities,” according to officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Nearly one in four business owners surveyed said the trail influenced their decision to open nearby.<\/p>\n
Trail visitors spend an average of $30.32 a day on lodging, food, retail and recreation, with overnight visitors spending an average of $540 per visit.<\/p>\n
PTNY added that “by providing safe and accessible spaces for walking, biking, jogging, and rolling, the Empire State Trail generates an estimated $78 million in annual health-related savings.”<\/p>\n
The study was based on public outreach and surveys conducted between September and December 2025.<\/p>\n
