{"id":26193,"date":"2025-11-02T22:08:19","date_gmt":"2025-11-02T22:08:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/26193\/"},"modified":"2025-11-02T22:08:19","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T22:08:19","slug":"nyc-marathon-perfect-weather-and-energized-new-yorkers-greet-55000-runners-for-the-great-five-borough-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/26193\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC MARATHON: Perfect weather and energized New Yorkers greet 55,000 runners for the great five-borough race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Clear blue skies and temperatures with a high of 59 degrees provided the perfect conditions for the over 55,000 runners participating in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyrr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">TCS New York City Marathon<\/a> on Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/?s=nyc+marathon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">iconic race<\/a>, now in its 55th year, began on Staten Island, where runners from more than 150 countries crossed the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn, before winding through Queens into the Bronx, and finally racing down Manhattan\u2019s Fifth Avenue to the finish line in Central Park.<\/p>\n<p>The 26.2-mile race kicked off with the Men\u2019s and Women\u2019s Professional Wheelchair Division at 8 a.m. and 8:02 a.m., respectively, followed by the handcycle category and select athletes with disabilities at 8:22 a.m.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Swiss Paralympic athlete Marcel Hug dominated the men\u2019s wheelchair race, finishing in 1 hour, 30 minutes, and 16 seconds -earning a record-setting seventh TCS New York Marathon championship. Now, it\u2019s his life,\u201d Sandoval shared.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 New York City Marathon was a first for the siblings.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is my first time attending the New York City Marathon. I\u2019m so excited,\u201d Sandoval declared.\u00a0 \u201cI can\u2019t wait to meet [Franisco] in another mile down the line. Photo by Gabriele Holtermann<\/p>\n<p>New York City resident Chris Mutterer\u2019s sign told amNewYork Metro that he has run the NYC Marathon three times, and the only reason he was skipping this year\u2019s endurance contest was that he had run the Javelina Jundred 100-mile race in Arizona the previous weekend, which he finished in 21 hours.\u00a0 Instead, he cheered on his friends as they ran the marathon from the sidelines.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got inspired, probably around 2020, and I went from the marathon to running some longer distances, and I went from 50 miles to 100 miles,\u201d Mutterer said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New Jerseyite Kelly Dunlop\u2019s brother, Jack, was part of the \u201cKeep A Child Alive\u201d running team. Dunlop told amNewYork Metro that her brother was not a runner, but was committed to the race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re so excited to see him accomplish a really big goal and a really big dream of his,\u201d said Dunlop, who had never been to the NYC Marathon.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is actually my first time, too, at the New York City Marathon,\u201d Dunlop said. \u201cThis is really an experience, and it\u2019s amazing. It\u2019s crazy seeing how everybody can come together, even though we\u2019re in a world of struggle, and all just cheer for the same thing. Photo by Gabriele Holtermann<\/p>\n<p>The Doherty family from Westchester told amNewYork that they loved the enthusiasm and energy of the marathon crowd while they were waiting for their daughter and sister, Mary, who ran the Marine Corps Marathon last year, to pass by.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Mary] just loves the thrill of [running a marathon], the challenge of it. She\u2019s always trying to beat her pace from her previous run. So she loves it,\u201d Christine Doherty, Mary\u2019s mom, explained her daughter\u2019s love for the long-distance race. \u201cI have to give my husband credit. He ran the marathon 25 years ago.
