WASHINGTON \u2014 Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates told a Capitol Hill hearing Wednesday that\u00a0Jeffrey Epstein<\/a>\u00a0used Gates\u2019 marital infidelities as \u201cleverage\u201d to keep the billionaire in Epstein\u2019s circle.<\/p>\n

In a prepared\u00a0opening statement<\/a>, Gates told committee members that he \u201cnever witnessed nor had any indication that Epstein was engaged in ongoing criminal conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI never went to his island, his ranch, or his Florida home. I have never victimized anyone. While he may have sought to foster a personal relationship, I was never interested in that and never reciprocated,\u201d he went on.<\/p>\n

But the philanthropist also disclosed that the late pedophile learned of Gates having \u201cbeen unfaithful in my marriage\u201d and sought \u201cto use information about my infidelities \u2014 in addition to many lies that he layered on top \u2014 to pressure me to re-engage with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was unsuccessful in this effort, but it shows some of the ways he tried to leverage his interactions with me to further his agenda,\u201d Gates added.<\/p>\n

\u201cI see now that he sought to build an image of legitimacy around himself, using connections to reputable and powerful people to deflect scrutiny and attempt to rehabilitate his reputation. I was so focused on the possibility of raising funds for global health that I allowed that goal to override my better judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, later told reporters during a break in the interview that Gates\u2019 comments on Epstein betrayed a \u201ctheme of using his [Epstein\u2019s] power of information against others.\u201d<\/p>\n

Displaying a slight grin as he entered the House office building, Gates told reporters before his interview:\u00a0\u201cI hope my testimony is helpful\u00a0to the important work of the committee\u00a0to find justice for the victims.\u201d<\/p>\n

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) said he wanted to learn more about Gates\u2019 relationship with Epstein and his convicted accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did he see? Did he know what was going on? Was he involved in any of this?\u201d Comer asked rhetorically<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure as we ask questions, more questions will arise,\u201d he added. \u201cI will say this: No one\u2019s accusing Bill Gates of any wrongdoing, and I certainly appreciate him coming in voluntarily.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emails and photos released by the Justice Department \u2014 in addition to remarks by Gates\u2019 ex-wife, Melinda, about Epstein having\u00a0contributed to the dissolution of the couple\u2019s 27-year marriage<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 have complicated the image the billionaire sought to cultivate as a philanthropist.<\/p>\n

In one photo released by the DOJ, Gates can be seen with Epstein, banker Jes Staley and former Harvard University President Larry Summers during a January 2011 dinner at Epstein\u2019s Manhattan penthouse.<\/p>\n

Gates told the committee on Wednesday that he first met Epstein in 2011 and was promised \u201cbillions of dollars for global health\u201d from the financier\u2019s \u201ctax and estate services\u201d clients.<\/p>\n

But after a total of five meetings in person, Gates said the talks reached \u201ca dead-end,\u201d with no \u201cmeaningful philanthropic support\u201d having been provided, causing him to cut off contact in December 2014.<\/p>\n

Epstein and Gates also traded more than a dozen emails between 2013 and 2015. Other communications show Epstein salaciously claiming that Gates had asked for the financier\u2019s help \u201cin order to deal with the consequences of sex with Russian girls.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Gates rep said in a statement that the\u00a0implication Gates had contracted a sexually transmitted disease was\u00a0\u201cabsolutely absurd and completely false.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the disclosures prompted Gates to come clean to the staff\u00a0of his foundation about\u00a0at least two affairs with Russian women<\/a>\u00a0referenced in DOJ investigative files on Epstein. Gates also acknolwedged that he had been accused of\u00a0more than 20 extramarital liaisons during divorce proceedings from Melinda.<\/p>\n

Epstein had purportedly\u00a0threatened to expose<\/a>\u00a0Gates\u2019 alleged affair\u00a0<\/a>with Russian bridge player Mila Antonova in 2017 due to Bill\u2019s refusal in joining a prospective philanthropic fund conceived by Epstein and JP Morgan Chase executives, The Wall Street Journal previously reported.<\/p>\n

Lawmakers and\u00a0staff on the Oversight Committee<\/a>\u00a0pressed further into the unlikely friendship as part of their 15th interview conducted in the bipartisan inquiry of the notorious case.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn retrospect, I was foolish to spend any time with him,\u201d the 70-year-old tech titan told the Journal in January\u00a0about his association with Epstein<\/a>, which occurred after the financier pleaded guilty to Florida prostitution and child sex trafficking charges.<\/p>\n

\u201cI recall being aware that Epstein had faced prior legal issues, but I did not fully understand the extent of the crimes he committed,\u201d Gates also said of Epstein\u2019s 2008 guilty plea in Wednesday\u2019s interview.<\/p>\n

Comer also told reporters he would next seek to ask Epstein\u2019s former criminal defense attorney, the law professor Alan Dershowitz, to interview with the Oversight panel.<\/p>\n

\u201cI offered to testify as a witness, and I hope they take me up on that,\u201d Dershowitz told The Post on Wednesday in response.<\/p>\n

That request followed an interview with the money manager\u2019s longtime assistant Lesley Groff, as well as other victims or survivors of Epstein\u2019s abuse.<\/p>\n

Comer and Garcia have also both suggested Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche should return to answer questions about the DOJ\u2019s release of around 3 million investigative files on Epstein.<\/p>\n
