St. John\u2019s Riverside Hospital is undertaking its most ambitious transformation in decades \u2014 doubling the size of its Emergency Department to meet the growing needs of Yonkers and the Rivertowns.<\/p>\n
For more than 130 years, St. John\u2019s Riverside Hospital has been at the cornerstone of healthcare for Yonkers and the surrounding Rivertown communities of Dobbs Ferry, Hastings-on-Hudson, Ardsley, and Irvington. Now, the hospital is making a bold investment in the people it has long served \u2014 a sweeping $16 million expansion of its Emergency Department that will redefine what it means to receive urgent care close to home.<\/p>\n
The milestone was marked with a Wall Breaking Ceremony on June 3, 2025, attended by Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, NYS Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, City Council President Lakisha Collins-Bellamy, and a host of community leaders \u2014 a testament to just how significant this project is for the region.<\/p>\n
\u00a0The numbers alone are striking, but the human story behind them is what matters most. The Andrus Pavilion Emergency Department in Yonkers was originally designed to serve approximately 23,000 patients per year. Today, it serves more than 40,000 \u2014 a reflection of just how much the community has grown and how deeply residents rely on St. John\u2019s when every minute counts. The expansion will bring capacity to serve up to 55,000 patients annually, ensuring that no neighbor is left waiting when care is urgent.<\/p>\n
Beyond sheer capacity, the renovation is fundamentally reimagining the patient experience. New treatment spaces will provide greater privacy, addressing one of the most consistent concerns patients raise about emergency care. A dedicated triage system will move patients to the appropriate level of care based on their acuity, while fast-track areas for lower-acuity needs will ease congestion for critical cases. A brand-new direct entrance from the parking areas will make arrival faster and less stressful for patients arriving by car.<\/p>\n

Funding for this transformative project reflects strong confidence from government partners at every level. The New York State Department of Health is contributing $15.3 million, while the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provided an additional $1 million grant \u2014 secured in part through the advocacy of former Congressman Jamal Bowman \u2014 specifically supporting infrastructure in the fast-track area of the new ER.<\/p>\n
At its Dobbs Ferry Pavilion, St. John\u2019s continues to offer 24\/7 emergency services with the intimate, community-centered feel the Rivertown\u2019s have come to trust. Both locations are staffed by quadruple board-certified physicians and experienced emergency nursing teams \u2014 specialists who rotate between campuses and are equipped to handle everything from pediatric emergencies to stroke care around the clock.<\/p>\n
