{"id":263090,"date":"2026-06-11T12:43:43","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T12:43:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/263090\/"},"modified":"2026-06-11T12:43:43","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T12:43:43","slug":"serena-williams-return-ends-prematurely-at-queens-club-due-to-mboko-injury-tennis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/263090\/","title":{"rendered":"Serena Williams\u2019 return ends prematurely at Queen\u2019s Club due to Mboko injury | Tennis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Serena Williams\u2019s first tournament since coming out of retirement has ended prematurely after her partner Victoria Mboko was forced to withdraw from the Queen\u2019s Club tournament <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2026\/jun\/10\/serena-williams-doubles-partnership-doubt-victoria-mboko-injury-tennis-hsbc-championships\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">after injuring her knee<\/a> when slipping on the grass in her singles match on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Williams made a sensational return to competition at 44 after a four-year absence on Tuesday alongside Mboko as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2026\/jun\/09\/serena-williams-makes-winning-return-to-tennis-with-victory-in-queens-doubles\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the pair defeated the third seeds<\/a> Nicole Melichar Martinez and Erin Routliffe 7-6(2), 6-2. The pair were scheduled to face Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Mboko, the third seed at Queen\u2019s Club, played her opening singles match a day later after receiving a first-round bye. Mboko had earned a break point in set two after losing the first set against the former No 1 Karolina Pliskova before an extremely bad fall, slipping on the grass after being wrong-footed. Photograph: Adrian Dennis\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The courts at Queen\u2019s Club are known for being some of the most high-quality grass surfaces on the tour but the slick nature of the courts make them particularly slippery in the first days of the tournament.
