BROOKLYN, N.Y. (TNND) \u2014 An 87-year-old parolee was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of murdering and dismembering a New York woman, according to prosecutors.<\/p>\n

The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office<\/a> on Wednesday said a jury recently found Harvey Marcelin guilty of first-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence, and concealment of a human corpse in connection to the death of 68-year-old Susan Leyde. <\/p>\n

“The brutality of this shocking crime is almost beyond words. This defendant committed a horrific murder that took Susan Leyden’s life and inflicted unimaginable pain on her family and loved ones,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said in a news release.”He must be locked away, and today\u2019s sentence ensures that he will never be able to hurt anyone else again. I hope this outcome provides Susan\u2019s family and loved ones with a measure of justice and some comfort as they continue to grieve,” Gonzalez added.<\/p>\n

Gonzalez said Leyden was last seen alive on Feb. 27, 2022, when surveillance video showed her entering Marcelin’s apartment building on Pennsylvania Avenue in East New York. <\/p>\n

Additional footage showed Marcelin, who reportedly identifies as a transgender woman<\/a>, rolling a wheeled shopping bag containing a black plastic bag on March 2, according to prosecutors. Early the next morning, Leyden’s torso was found inside the bag.<\/p>\n

Police later searched Marcelin’s apartment and found Leyden’s head and limbs, along with blood, cleaning supplies, a hammer, and a box for an electric saw, prosecutors said. One of Leyden’s legs was discovered near a garbage can about three blocks away on March 7.<\/p>\n

Investigators also recovered footage showing Marcelin buying a saw and cleaning supplies at a Manhattan Home Depot around the time of Leyden’s disappearance.<\/p>\n

The New York City medical examiner determined that Leyden died from blunt force trauma to the head and other injuries.<\/p>\n

According to prosecutors, Marcelin and Leyden had lived in the same Bronx shelter in 2019, though investigators said the nature of their relationship wasn’t immediately clear.<\/p>\n

Marcelin’s conviction was elevated to first-degree murder because of a previous first-degree murder conviction in Manhattan in 1963, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"BROOKLYN, N.Y.
