NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — The 69th annual National Puerto Rican Day Parade kicks off in Manhattan Sunday, marking one of the biggest cultural celebrations in New York City.<\/p>\n
The theme? “Somos Mas Que 100 Times 35.”<\/p>\n

And in honor of the special day, we will dedicate a whole hour to celebrate Boricua pride! We have a jammed packed show filled with special guests.<\/p>\n
Joining us is parade honoree Papo Vazquez. He’s an acclaimed trombonist, composer, arranger and bandleader. His career spans more than five decades.<\/p>\n
Also joining us is Parade Ambassador Lilibeth Torres, known as “La Boricua Lorian.” As you can imagine, she’s a huge Star Wars fan.<\/p>\n
Torres fused her Puerto Rican heritage with inspiration from “The Mandalorian” to create her signature persona.<\/p>\n
We’ll talk with the parade’s athletes of the year as well. They are Jockey Brothers Jose and Irad Ortiz.<\/p>\n
If you’re a fan of thoroughbred horse racing, then you know they are among the most dominant and respected jockeys in the sport. They are from Trujillo Alto.<\/p>\n
And wait, there’s more! Mina Ownlee is joining us this episode. She’s a Bronx Boricua who wrote a children’s book, “Layla Bella – A Puerto Rican Cinderella Story.”<\/p>\n
The book preserves Puerto Rican culture, identity and representation for young readers.<\/p>\n
And one week after its own Puerto Rican Day parade, we’ll travel to Yonkers. Each year, the Westchester city kicks off the Boricua celebrations.<\/p>\n
We’ll also catch up with the parade organizers and two of the scholarship honorees in this episode.<\/p>\n
