Jessica Bond Ferguson \/ Facebook<\/p>\n<p>The 35-year-old mother of five \u2014 whose children range from 4 to 16 \u2014 said she jumped out of bed, grabbed her gun and phone, and went outside after calling police.<\/p>\n<p>About 60 feet from her home, she said, she spotted the monkey and chose to take matters into her own hands to ensure her children\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did what any other mother would do to protect her children,\u201d\u00a0Bond Ferguson told the Associated Press. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI shot at it and it just stood there, and I shot again, and he backed up and that\u2019s when he fell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With police and animal control not yet on the scene, the mother of five said, she decided to shoot the monkey, fearing it would get away and possibly become a threat to children at another house in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>The mother of five said she spotted the monkey about 60 feet from her home and chose to take matters into her own hands to ensure her children\u2019s safety. Jessica Bond Ferguson \/ Facebook<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it attacked somebody\u2019s kid, and I could have stopped it, that would be a lot on me,\u201d Bond Ferguson said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of scary and dangerous that they are running around, and people have kids playing in their yards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a post on social media, the Jasper County Sheriff\u2019s Office confirmed that a homeowner discovered one of the monkeys on their property Sunday morning but offered no other details.<\/p>\n<p>The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks has since taken control of the animal.<\/p>\n<p>The shooting of the monkey comes several days after a truck loaded with 21 caged rhesus monkeys\u00a0crashed\u00a0on Interstate 59, just north of Heidelberg, on Oct. 27.<\/p>\n<p>Tulane University said the rhesus monkeys came from its National Biomedical Research Center in New Orleans, a site that commonly furnishes primates to research institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Tulane said 13 were recovered at the site and safely transported last week, five died during the search, and three continued to roam free until Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>With police and animal control not on the scene, the mother of five said, she decided to shoot the monkey, fearing it would get away and possibly become a threat to children at another house in the neighborhood. Jessica Bond Ferguson \/ Facebook<\/p>\n<p>Shocking video footage from the crash site captured the 16-pound rhesus monkeys moving through high grass near the highway, with splintered wooden crates labeled \u201cLive Animals\u201d strewn around them.<\/p>\n<p>Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson said Tulane officials reported the monkeys were not infectious, despite initial reports by the truck\u2019s occupants that the monkeys were dangerous and harbored various diseases. <\/p>\n<p>The monkeys had undergone recent health screenings that showed they were clear of pathogens, Tulane said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, however, said the monkeys still needed to be \u201cneutralized\u201d because of their aggressive nature.<\/p>\n<p>Rhesus monkeys are known to exhibit aggressive behavior, especially under certain conditions, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5361036\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">National Library of Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The average adult rhesus monkey typically weighs between 9 and 26 pounds, depending on its sex.
