News12 is taking a closer look at the race for New York\u2019s 10th congressional district ahead of the New York primary.<\/p>\n
News12 spoke with Brad Lander, looking to take the seat and bring his decades of experience in governing along with him. <\/p>\n
His work in New York politics began 30 years ago, and still, Lander says he\u2019s not done with his fight. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a five-alarm fire for our democracy,\u201d said Lander. \u201c[President] Donald Trump is abducting our immigrant neighbors, is shredding people’s voting rights, and is stealing $2 billion from the American people to give to his insurrectionist cronies. We need fighters in Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n
Which is why he\u2019s running for Congress, to represent more than 700,000 New Yorkers in Lower Manhattan and several Brooklyn neighborhoods. <\/p>\n
He says his main agenda is clear. <\/p>\n
\u201cFighting this fascist president,\u201d said Lander. \u201cProtecting our immigrant neighbors and winning a more affordable city where people could afford the rent, the healthcare, and the childcare. This is an amazing district. People love living here, but the cost of housing is insane, and so people are feeling pushed out of their own neighborhoods. People’s kids, even my kids, can’t afford to live here.\u201d<\/p>\n
As a former city councilor, former city comptroller, and mayoral candidate, he\u2019s asking voters to look at his resume before heading to the polls. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I was New York City comptroller,\u201d said Lander, \u201cI issued the first social bonds in the history of the city \u2013 that’s using municipal finance. I generated $4 billion to build 12,000 affordable homes for low-income and working-class people. I want to do the same in Washington. They’ve never been social bonds that use us treasuries, but we could generate hundreds of billions of dollars and then build affordable housing around here.\u201d<\/p>\n
News 12 asked him what makes him stand out from his opponent, who has held the seat since 2023.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople want leaders who will fight shoulder to shoulder with their neighbors,\u201d said Lander. \u201cI know how to make government work better for you.
