NEW YORK, June 16 (Reuters) – Luigi Mangione, the man accused of gunning down a health insurance executive on a \u200cManhattan sidewalk, is due for a state court hearing on Tuesday \u200cahead of his highly anticipated murder trial.<\/p>\n
Mangione, 28, is accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO \u200bBrian Thompson outside a hotel in Midtown in December 2024, a brazen killing that was widely condemned by public officials but became emblematic of Americans\u2019 frustration with rising healthcare costs and health insurance industry practices.<\/p>\n
Mangione pleaded not guilty \u200cin December 2024 to state \u2060murder, weapons and forgery charges brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.<\/p>\n
His trial is set for September before Justice \u2060Gregory Carro in Manhattan.<\/p>\n
The agenda for Tuesday’s hearing is not clear and comes two weeks after Carro held a sealed, virtual proceeding with prosecutors and defense \u200blawyers.<\/p>\n
Thompson \u200bled UnitedHealth Group’s insurance unit before he \u200bwas shot dead in the \u200cearly morning outside a hotel where he was staying for an investor conference.<\/p>\n
Graphic footage of the killing and a five-day manhunt for a suspect made the case a media fixture and social media sensation. Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n
Mangione separately pleaded not guilty in April 2025 to murder, weapons \u200cand stalking charges brought by Manhattan federal \u200bprosecutors.<\/p>\n
U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett, who is overseeing \u200bthe case, threw out \u200bthe murder and weapons charges over legal technicalities in a \u200csurprise ruling in January. That decision eliminated \u200bthe possibility that \u200bMangione would face the death penalty, though he still faces a possible sentence of life without parole if convicted of stalking.<\/p>\n
Jury selection in \u200bthat case is set \u200cto begin in September, and opening statements in the trial \u200bare scheduled for November.<\/p>\n
