New York hotels have offered plenty of amenities over the years: rooftop cocktails, spa treatments, sleep concierges and even dog butlers<\/a>. But a Greenwich Village boutique hotel is now trying something considerably more ambitious: helping couples work through a fight before it turns into something bigger.<\/p>\n

In August, Walker Hotel Greenwich Village<\/a> will launch The Apology Room, a limited-time overnight experience designed around the idea that saying “I’m sorry” is often the easy part. (Actually repairing the damage? That’s where things get tricky.)<\/p>\n

The concept was developed in partnership with The 5 Love Languages<\/a> and draws inspiration from The 5 Apology Languages<\/a>, which argues that different people respond to different forms of apology. Essentially, if you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “I apologized\u2014what more do you want?” this experience is aimed squarely at you.<\/p>\n

According to NPR<\/a>, divorce attorneys often see a surge in divorce filings in late summer,\u00a0especially\u00a0in August and September, making the end of summer one of the busiest periods of the year for family law practices. Researchers have also found that divorce filings tend to follow seasonal patterns, with peaks in both spring and late summer.<\/p>\n

The hotel\u2019s experience unfolds in two stages: first comes “The Conversation,” which takes place in a private alcove within the hotel. Couples are given guided discussion prompts and materials based on the apology-language framework and a few hospitality-minded icebreakers. Depending on your preferred method of conflict resolution, that might mean a cup of tea or a signature mocktail called \u201cThe Olive Branch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then comes “The Reconnection.” After the conversation, guests retreat to a specially prepared hotel room, where a series of sealed envelopes guides the rest of the evening with exercises focused on reflection, accountability and forgiveness. The package also includes dessert delivery, breakfast for two at Society Cafe and a late checkout. (Few things kill a vulnerable emotional breakthrough faster than a noon departure deadline.)<\/p>\n

While a boutique hotel room probably won\u2019t single-handedly rescue a relationship that’s been unraveling for years, for couples looking for a structured way to have a difficult conversation, The Apology Room may be a more appealing alternative than another tense dinner where nobody says the truth.<\/p>\n

The Apology Room will be available for a limited time throughout August at Walker Hotel Greenwich Village.
