{"id":270977,"date":"2026-06-18T16:17:54","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T16:17:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/270977\/"},"modified":"2026-06-18T16:17:54","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T16:17:54","slug":"a-brooklyn-affordable-housing-development-moves-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/270977\/","title":{"rendered":"A Brooklyn Affordable Housing Development Moves Forward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Built on state land on the former Kingsboro Psychiatric Center Site, Flatbush gained over 300 affordable housing units while construction on another project started. <\/p>\n<p>The state finished building over 300 affordable apartments\u00a0in Flatbush on Wednesday, and started on another affordable complex that will add over 200 units to the area.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Kathy Hochul was in Brooklyn to celebrate the completion of<a href=\"https:\/\/monadnockdevelopment.com\/project\/utica-crescent\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Utica Crescent,<\/a> a 322-unit complex part of the state&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/hcr.ny.gov\/vital-brooklyn-initiative\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vital Brooklyn<\/a> program that is building thousands of affordable units on state-owned land.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Constructed on a former parking lot adjacent to the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, the apartments at Utica Crescent are for households earning up to 80% of Area Median Income, including 89 with on-site supportive services for eligible elderly residents. The health and wellness-oriented hub includes a healthcare center operated by One Brooklyn Health System, retail space, grocery store, community facility, and exercise and recreational opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>The project will include fully accessible and adaptable apartments. There are 17 units to accommodate residents with mobility disabilities and seven units to accommodate residents with sensory disabilities, officials said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" id=\"file-4424592\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image.jpeg;w=960.jpeg\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nA rendering of Sparrow Square. Photo: Supplied\/Breaking Ground&#13;<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the state started construction on the first phase of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.audevco.com\/projects\/sparrow-square\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sparrow Square<\/a>, a 261-unit complex, with partners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakingground.org\/?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=643161033&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADQ0mg0dYZ1bEkOtpcpalWAOWkCkp&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwi8nRBhDhARIsAHZf_pY3ZY_78LP16Kqglv87Vy1uAHN1leoSZgz5Hu9nKQWhRrBUmLXcFZQaAlPuEALw_wcB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Breaking Ground<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.douglastondevelopment.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Douglaston Development.<\/a>\u00a0There will be two buildings, and more than 100 units will be reserved for eligible vulnerable households and those struggling with homelessness who are eligible to receive on-site supportive services.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0first phase will have approximately 20,000-square-feet of community facility space and 63,000-square-feet when fully complete, a ballet studio, and resident social service space. When complete, the proposed project will\u00a0provide up to 1,081 new affordable homes of which 9% would be owner-occupied.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The project will also include fully accessible and adaptable apartments.
