We\u2019re about to take a battery site, toxic when it catches fire, and allow it to leach into the water that is running down there\u2026it\u2019s rather ironic that we want to save the planet but we\u2019re going to poison our own groundwater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XWZQUWH27VDT7MFOVTWC4WMHJI\">Fossella says plans have been filed at the site to build a 10,000 square foot facility that will house four lithium-ion battery megapacks. The applicant listed on the plans is Waldron Engineering, a construction management firm specializing in the energy industry. The firm did not respond to a request for comment about the project.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Officials blast plan for Staten Island battery facility near homes, atop active waterway\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3WFAIIXBXZCINOY74LQIXKTKJI.jpg\"  \/>&#8220;It\u2019s rather ironic that we want to save the planet but we\u2019re going to poison our own groundwater,&#8221; said Assemblymember Sam Pirozzolo at Wednesday&#8217;s press conference.(Advance\/SILive | Jessica Jones-Gorman)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WGIGQND4TVH4JPCF66J75ZSKIE\">\u201cIf [these units] catch fire, as they\u2019ve done throughout the country, they have to evacuate neighborhoods, they close highways down,\u201d Fossella said. \u201cAnd yet there are people in this city, in this state, who think it\u2019s a good idea to dump one of these things in your backyard\u2026you do not deserve to have one of these next to your home or business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XND2K6MYXZFN7P5FDXWKWQF3QY\">Mark Anderson, who heads the Westerleigh Improvement Society, voiced his concerns about persistent flooding that often occurs at the proposed site.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Officials blast plan for Staten Island battery facility near homes, atop active waterway\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/QHMSF5LK65GYNLIP2CT4SZVYKA.jpg\"  \/>According to Mark Anderson, who heads the Westerleigh Improvement Society, the tributary runs under the property and throughout the neighboring community.
