The 2025 New York City Marathon<\/a> was full of surprises: Eliud Kipchoge raced in a long-sleeved shirt<\/a>. Virtually unknown Joel Reichow was the top American<\/a> and finished sixth overall. Salomon\u2014yes, the trail shoe company\u2014built a road racer that proved speedy enough to claim fifth place. And then there were the storylines we all expected: Hellen Obiri and Sharon Lokedi<\/a> duked it out for the win. And Adidas<\/a> and Nike<\/a> packed the top spots with the Adios and Alphafly.<\/p>\n

Here are the running shoes<\/a> that were on the feet of the top finishers. <\/p>\n

MEN1) Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2<\/p>\n

Benson Kipruto (KEN) 2:08:09<\/p>\n

Kipruto (leading in image above) laced up the newest version of the infamous $500 marathon racing shoe<\/a>. The silver model has more foam under the forefoot.<\/p>\n

2) Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4<\/p>\n

Alexander Mutiso (KEN) 2:08:09<\/p>\n

Mutiso narrowly missed winning by three-hundredths of a second. On his feet was the standard \u201csuper shoe\u201d marathon racer from Adidas.<\/p>\n

3) Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4<\/p>\n

Korir repeats his third place finish from last year. In 2024, he ran 2:08, too. And, like last year, he wore the Adios Pro 4. Money, it\u2019s gotta be the shoes.<\/p>\n

4) Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 3<\/p>\n

Dever made a stellar debut in the marathon while wearing the Fast-R Nitro Elite 3. The shoe garnered headlines earlier this year when a study showed it improved running economy<\/a> by up to 3.6 percent. The racer has been hard to get ahold of, as it\u2019s mostly been sold out<\/a> since launch.<\/p>\n

5) Salomon \u201cS\/LAB 491616\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthias Kyburz (SUI) 2:09:55<\/p>\n

Kyburz came through the 24-mile mark in a pack of 6 guys, making it tough to isolate him. But, we peeped his \u201cdevelopment\u201d shoes, which are on the approved-shoes list by World Athletics<\/a>. We don\u2019t have insight into the shoe, but a curved line on the sidewall of the midsole foam suggests that there may be a scooped plate embedded within. The upper is all white and has a gaiter-like cover that also shrouds the laces.<\/p>\n

6) Asics Metaspeed Edge Tokyo<\/p>\n

Joel Reichow (USA) 2:09:56<\/p>\n

Reichow (in the background) was in the same pack as Kyburz and was well hidden on the far side of the road when he dashed past me. He had a breakthrough race and finished as the top American. The Edge is one of two super shoes Asics has built, catering to runners who go faster by taking more strides (Edge) or longer steps (Sky).<\/p>\n

7) Nike Alphafly 3<\/p>\n

Charles Hicks (USA) 2:09:59<\/p>\n

The Alphafly 3<\/a> is Nike\u2019s top marathon racing shoe and has been around for nearly two years now. A \u201cdevelopment\u201d version that might be its successor\u2014but looks much like the AF3\u2014was also on the roads (Eliud Kipchoge finished 17th wearing a pair).<\/p>\n

8) Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3<\/p>\n

Sondre Nordstad Moen (NOR) 2:10:15<\/p>\n

Moen hung on for a top-10 finish in the Deviate Elite, Puma\u2019s original super racer. It has a more traditional shoe construction than the Elite 3 we saw earlier, with a plate fully embedded in the foam. It feels a little snappier for shorter races. We awarded this shoe Gear of the Year in 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On makes a flashy, laceless version of its top racing shoe, as seen on the women\u2019s side, but Klecker opted for the version with shoelaces. This model gives you better adjustability if the laceless bootie doesn\u2019t fit quite right.<\/p>\n

1) On Cloudboom Strike LS<\/p>\n

Like she did in Boston, Obiri (second in this image) slipped into one of the hottest shoes of the past year. The On Cloudboom Strike LS<\/a> is a laceless shoe that\u2019s created by a robot in just three minutes. <\/p>\n

2) Under Armour Velociti Elite 3<\/p>\n

The newest version of UA\u2019s $250 marathon shoe has a two-layer, beaded HTPU midsole and 37.5mm stack height. That combined with full-length rockered plate gives the shoe a really snappy underfoot feeling, yet the shoe is clearly capable of going the distance.<\/p>\n

Hassan raced in the prototype version of the Alphafly that looks a lot like the current model. Her shoe actually has \u201cDEV 16141,\u201d the name by which Nike submitted the shoe to World Athletics for approval, written on the midsole. One difference we saw from photos on the course is that the forefoot outsole appears to be a solid piece of black rubber\u2014it doesn\u2019t have rounded pods below the Air units.<\/p>\n

7) Hoka Cielo X1 2.0<\/p>\n

The Cielo X1 2.0<\/a> is Hoka\u2019s wildest super shoe. The bouncy foam and radical geometry make it a little harder to tame than the Rocket X 3<\/a>. In Chicago, we got a peek at this shoe\u2019s successor<\/a>.<\/p>\n

8) New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite v5<\/p>\n
