Speaking at the Kings Theatre, Mamdani warned incumbents who treat their seat as a substitute for action, saying they should \u201cwatch out.\u201d He framed the upcoming primaries not merely as local contests but as a test of the Democratic Party\u2019s direction.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Democratic Party must change,\u201d Mamdani told supporters. <\/p>\n
He argued that the party had too often focused on managing decline rather than delivering concrete results for working people, and that this approach would fail in future presidential battlegrounds if left unchanged. \u201cIt starts now. It starts on Tuesday,\u201d he said, suggesting that New York\u2019s outcomes could signal a wider national realignment ahead of the 2028 presidential race.<\/p>\n
Mamdani was joined by Senator Bernie Sanders, a leading figure in the party\u2019s progressive wing. Sanders urged supporters to back movement-aligned candidates and argued that voters are increasingly aware of a system shaped in favour of wealthy interests.<\/p>\n
The rally highlighted several progressive challengers in closely watched House races: former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, challenging Representative Dan Goldman; state Assemblymember Claire Valdez, running for the seat being vacated by Representative Nydia Vel\u00e1zquez; and community organiser Darializa Avila Chevalier, seeking to unseat Representative Adriano Espaillat. <\/p>\n
Several of these candidates have the backing of the Democratic Socialists of America and progressive organisations aligned with Sanders.<\/p>\n
The event also reflected growing attention to outside political influence in New York primaries, including the role of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee \u2014 a recurring point of discussion in progressive campaigns. Sanders reiterated his call to restrict the influence of super PACs in elections.<\/p>\n
The atmosphere mixed political messaging with local cultural references, including multiple nods to the New York Knicks following their recent championship. Mamdani, wearing a Knicks jersey beneath his suit, told the crowd, \u201cThe only hands we can count on are ours,\u201d emphasising grassroots mobilisation.<\/p>\n
Recent polling points to competitive races across several districts. Lander appears to hold an advantage over Goldman, while the contest for Vel\u00e1zquez\u2019s seat is closely contested. <\/p>\n
The race involving Espaillat remains less publicly polled, though internal surveys reportedly show Avila Chevalier gaining ground.
