Over the next 15 years, it would be used by some of Britain’s biggest artists, including The Beatles —who recorded ‘Hey Jude’ there— David Bowie, Elton John and the Rolling Stones.

By 1972, the Sheffield brothers had started to develop their own talent, and had become aware of a “raw and demanding” new four-piece rock band which was then known as Smile.

After watching them play a one-hour support gig in Denmark Hill, they agreed to sign and manage the band, which was promptly renamed Queen.

Under Trident’s management, the band recorded three albums and a number of hit singles, including ‘Seven Seas of Rhye’ and ‘Killer Queen’.

Queen stars John Deacon, Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor and Brian May (PA Archive)

Sheffield and the band had a fractious relationship, though – particularly with frontman Freddie Mercury.

“Roger Taylor was a really good-looking kid, with long blond hair and charm. Brian May was tall with a mane of curls and a little introverted but clearly very intelligent.

“The bass player, John Deacon, was also quiet. I could tell right away that the fourth member was going to be high maintenance,” wrote Sheffield in his biography, Life on Two Legs: Set the Record Straight.

“The more successful they became, the more agitated Queen had grown about money. One of the most heated rows came when John got married. In the run-up to the wedding he announced he wanted me to spring £10,000 (about £90,000 in 2013 values) for him to buy a house. I didn’t react too well.”

By 1975, the relationship had completed deteriorated, with Mercury dedicating a scathing song to Sheffield, called ‘Death on Two Legs’.

In it, he called him a “sewer rat decaying in a cesspool of pride”, writing: “You suck my blood like a leach”. Sheffield sued Queen for defamation and secured an out-of-court settlement.

<img decoding="async" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///ywAAAAAAQABAAACAUwAOw==" Queen spent time at Sheffield’s house (Hamptons)

In the end, the band’s acrimonious split with Sheffield happened later that year, with Queen paying Trident £100,000 in severance fees and reluctantly agreeing to 1 per cent of album royalties, according to Laura Jackson’s biography of the band.

EMI initially took control of recording and publishing, and John Reid —who managed Elton John— took over as manager later in the year.

Sheffield’s former home, called Trevigue, would have formed the backdrop to his turbulent time with Queen.

According to the current owners, the band spent a lot of time at Sheffield’s home, mingling with the other stars he worked with – including <a href="https://www.standard.co.uk/topic/elton-john" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Elton two acres of land.

Today, Trevigue is arranged across two floors, with a grand reception hall —complete with curved staircase and an enormous hearth— at its centre.

Downstairs, there is a double aspect, 839-square-foot drawing room, dining room, kitchen and breakfast room, office and study, with a wine cellar below.

<p heated swimming pool and pool house with a kitchenette and changing rooms.

There’s also an ornamental pond, courtyard garden, vegetable garden, soft fruit garden and orchard, while the property is sold with a collection of outbuildings, garages and greenhouses.

   <img decoding="async"
