I’m a retired veterinary technician with 56 years of equine experience. I spent a day at the carriage horse stables speaking to the owners of the horses, drivers, farriers and veterinary professionals. I put my hands on these horses. I got to see their feed, their watering facilities and their sanitation. I went out with the carriages and took a ride. I learned the histories of some of the horses. I learned the strict working conditions and laws that are followed for their welfare. Did you know that they get six months of vacation a year at a farm in Pennsylvania?

These horses have some of the best conditions I’ve ever seen! They have high-quality grain and free choice hay, which is ideal for most horses. They have automatic waterers that were clean and easily accessible. The horses were well-groomed and healthy looking. They had frequently scheduled checkups and dental care. The place was clean and airy. They have emergency fire sprinklers that any equine facility would envy.

The horses were all quietly munching hay or lying down in their roomy stalls. Anyone with real horse experience knows that a quiet, peaceful stable equals content, happy horses. These horses have great lives, and they’re happy with it. You wanna go for someone over horses’ working conditions, have a look at the Amish.

Jennifer Tomlinson

Inevitable accidents

Fort Erie, Ontario: Albert Einstein reportedly said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Forcing horses to haul carriages, watching them spook and bolt, and not putting an end to the madness — that’s insane.

Philip Tripp

Drink responsibly

Ozone Park: What is the problem with the fuss over the World Cup’s mandatory hydration breaks? Just keep the players separate from the coaching staff so they don’t get coaching info out of the normal procedures. Simple, isn’t it?

Ray Hackinson

The wait is over

Bronx: Congratulations to my New York Knicks! I remember 1970 and 1973. I was crushed after Game 7 in 1994 and enjoyed making the Finals in 1999. That season was fun. I remember the Rangers’ opposing fans always chanting “1940” because that was the last season the Rangers won the Stanley Cup until 1994, which meant Rangers fans waited 54 years until celebrating a championship. Now, after 53 years, the Knicks did it! They really did it! Not in my wildest dreams did I think that was possible this season. As a 67-year-old, I’ll cherish this achievement. Millennials who never experienced our last championship will echo what Boston Red Sox fans shouted after 2004: “Now I can rest in peace.”

Eric Cummings Jr.

Resist the assist

Suffern, N.Y.: In the future, on every visiting NBA coach’s pregame chalkboard: “Block out OG Anunoby!”

Rick Sinclair

Divine delight

White Plains, N.Y.: When I was 15, my boyfriend, an avid basketball fan, took me to my first and only Knicks game. I recently learned of his passing. I’m sure he’s looking down now and relishing in the 2026 championship. Enjoy the celebrations, Freddy, and rest in peace.

Randi Bernstein Feigenbaum

Foul ballers

Bayside: By coincidence, I was watching the NBA network and the commentator made a comment that it wasn’t rude that the Spurs didn’t have to shake hands with the winners, the Knicks. He felt that sportsmanship wasn’t necessary and it was alright for the Spurs to walk off the court. That’s BS. The first thing you teach youngsters is to not be sore losers. Victor Wembanyama is the worst sore loser of all of them. He’s probably the one who told his team to walk off like the Pistons in the ’90s. Knicks repeat champs in 2027!

Michael Sternbach

History repeats?

Brooklyn: President Trump signed the Iran treaty at Versailles. Is an invasion by Cuban exiles at the Bay of Pigs the next move?

John O’Hara

Dignified dissent

Bellerose Village: If JD Vance wants to prove he’s not as stupid as he looks, he’d have refused to sign the Iran deal (American surrender) and then resign with dignity. It was his one and only shot at being the Republican nominee for president in 2028.

Peter O’Connor

Nasty accusation

Brooklyn: To Voicer Barry Koppel: You insinuated that Mayor Mamdani was happy about the Hamas attack on Oct. 7. I don’t know who is more despicable, you or The News for printing your vile letter. Mamdani, myself and many others support our Jewish community, and not the state of Israel or the warmongers Benjamin Netanyahu and Trump! Yes, there is a difference, just as we support our country and fellow Americans yet denounce our country’s current evil administration. To think our mayor would cheer such a tragic event is undeniably inane and incredibly biased. Mr. Koppel, I think you are the one with hate and bigotry in your heart, not our mayor.

Susan Cassano

Minority preference

Hicksville, L.I.: To Voicer Heyward Johnson: Like you, I’ve been writing to the Daily News for more than 50 years. I know our worldview is different, but today’s Democratic Party could care less about the Black community. Gone are the days when Democrats stood up for the working poor and middle-class. The millions of voters who elected President Barack Obama twice have been cast aside by a party more interested in making illegal immigrants’ lives better at the expense of the native-born. Just look at the politicians breaking bread with illegal gangbangers while those in Black and poor white communities suffer. They’re offered benefits that Americans can only dream of. As someone who grew up in a large, union-based family that always voted Democrat, I can say that party is dead.

John Gelormino

Personal insult

Montreal: Evenson Dumerlus, a Quebec officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, has been charged with uttering threats against Trump, a criminal offense punishable by up to five years in prison. The alleged incidents occurred during the G7 summit in June 2025 in Alberta, Canada, where Dumerlus was stationed. Dumerlus, who is of Haitian descent, may hold a grudge against Trump for his treatment of Haitian immigrants living in the U.S., particularly during the last presidential campaign when he claimed they eat domestic cats and dogs in Springfield, Ohio. I suspect Trump will follow this case closely. If Dumerlus is sentenced to the maximum penalty (Trump would surely prefer the death penalty, but Canada opposes it), the country with the maple leaf will be viewed favorably by the president. Otherwise, his anger could erupt and cost Prime Minister Mark Carney dearly.

Sylvio Le Blanc

D.C. swamp

Hicksville, L.I.: Could there be a better metaphor for the Trump administration than the green, algae-ridden Reflecting Pool?

Steven Malinofsky

Panel from abroad

Brooklyn: Can anyone explain to me why there aren’t any Americans judging the contestants on the TV show “America’s Got Talent”?

Andrew J.
