Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni clapped back at President Trump Saturday for what she called his \u201csenseless\u201d attacks<\/a> \u2013 as their extraordinary transatlantic feud escalated.<\/p>\n

The two leaders traded barbs on social media, with Meloni posting on Instagram shortly after Trump slammed her on his Truth Social account.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump, these constant, unprovoked attacks are senseless. As for my popularity, being your friend certainly has not helped it, nor does it depend on my relationship with you,\u201d Meloni wrote on Instagram.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy popularity depends on my ability to defend Italy\u2019s national interest, and that is exactly what I have always done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she referenced US use of military bases in Italy, saying they are governed by agreements \u201cwe have always respected.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn any case, my popularity is none of your concern. I suggest you focus on yours,\u201d she concluded in a sharp sign-off.<\/p>\n

The spat began when Trump claimed at the G7<\/a> last week that Meloni had \u201cbegged\u201d him to take a photo <\/a>with her.<\/p>\n

Meloni quickly rejected the claim in her own post on Friday, to which Trump responded on Truth Social earlier Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cItalian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni asked, over and over, for a picture with me during the G-7 meeting in France,\u201d the president insisted on his social media platform.<\/p>\n
