BROOKLYN, New York (WABC) — City leaders have pledged to rebuild after a massive fire destroyed the historic South Bushwick Reformed Church in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n
The three-alarm fire broke out just before 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church on Bushwick Avenue. Flames quickly engulfed the structure, causing its iconic steeple to collapse and spreading to nearby buildings.<\/p>\n
The church, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, has long served as a landmark in the Bushwick community. Neighbors and congregation members say the loss is devastating.<\/p>\n
“It’s like history is gone,” church board member Robert Camacho said Friday. “It’s disheartening.”<\/p>\n
Pastor James Stewart said the congregation is heartbroken but remains committed to moving forward.<\/p>\n
“When we think about the 175 years of ministry here, it’s a devastating loss emotionally, but we know that the church is more than just a building, it’s people,” Stewart said.<\/p>\n
Attorney General Letitia James visited the scene and pledged support for rebuilding efforts.<\/p>\n
“Church is more than a structure. Church is within. And that’s why this church will rebuild,” James said.<\/p>\n
One firefighter suffered minor injuries and refused medical attention. No other injuries were reported.<\/p>\n
Investigators are continuing to work to determine what caused the fire. Officials have said there is no indication the fire is suspicious.<\/p>\n
The church sustained catastrophic damage and is expected to be demolished.<\/p>\n
