One thing that set Oscar McKible apart, she says, was how he coached others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When her class was working on a tough problem, she says, some students would \u201cjust give him a look,\u201d and Oscar would respond.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThey know he\u2019s willing to help,\u201d says Lucarini, known to students as Ms. Luc. \u201cHe lets the students try to do the work the best they can, but if they get stuck, he\u2019s almost Socratic in his approach. He\u2019s gained this skill already as an educator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oscar-mckible-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-od-unknown-tag=\"\" data-od-xpath=\"\/HTML\/BODY\/DIV[@id='page']\/*[3][self::DIV]\/*[1][self::SECTION]\/*[1][self::MAIN]\/*[2][self::DIV]\/*[1][self::ARTICLE]\/*[1][self::DIV]\/*[6][self::FIGURE]\/*[1][self::A]\/*[1][self::IMG]\" data-dominant-color=\"4d5054\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #4d5054;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5876520 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oscar-mckible-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Oscar McKible\" width=\"400\" height=\"500\"  \/><\/a>Oscar McKible<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While he seems low-key, Oscar says he has a strong competitive drive. \u201cI wanted to be the best,\u201d he says. \u201cI decided to go all in.\u201d He took the SAT five times, boosting his score from 1,480 to 1,590 (of 1,600).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the fall, Oscar plans to attend Boston University to study health science. He became interested in infectious diseases during the pandemic. \u201cI heard about researchers doing important work, trying to stop Covid,\u201d he says. \u201cThis is a big, real-world issue using science and math, which is exactly what I want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He took the science research class at BHS for three years running, focusing first on Covid and then bird flu. This past year, he researched Chagas disease, which impacts 8 million people annually, mostly in Latin America. It\u2019s spread by \u201ckissing bugs.\u201d He chose it because it\u2019s undertreated and spreading north due to global warming. Rather than work as physician, Oscar says he wants to \u201ctry and treat the issues on a societal scale, focusing on prevention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Oscar founded the high school\u2019s SAT prep club, tutored elementary and middle schoolers and played clarinet in the pep band, jazz band and pit orchestra.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Samantha Ryan-Ferry, the band teacher, says he rehearsed for performances without enrolling in band because it conflicted with calculus. \u201cHe\u2019s so dedicated,\u201d she says.
