FORDHAM, Bronx (WABC) — Charges are expected to be announced Monday against an 18-year-old driver accused of striking multiple NYPD officers, including a sergeant, while driving a stolen vehicle in the Bronx.<\/p>\n
The incident happened around 6 p.m. Sunday on East Fordham Road after police were alerted by a license plate reader that a stolen silver Kia Sportage with New Jersey plates was seen in the area.<\/p>\n
According to the NYPD, officers tracked the vehicle and eventually surrounded it near 82 East Fordham Road after it pulled over. Police ordered three occupants to exit the SUV, but investigators say the driver refused to comply.<\/p>\n
Instead, the driver allegedly moved the vehicle back and forth, striking a sergeant who was standing outside the SUV and hitting several other officers during the encounter.<\/p>\n
Authorities say an officer then climbed onto the hood of the vehicle and fired a single shot, striking the driver in the arm.<\/p>\n
The 18-year-old suspect was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital and is recovering in stable condition. He remains in police custody. A passenger who was inside the vehicle is also in custody.<\/p>\n
Police are still searching for a third person who exited the SUV before the confrontation escalated.<\/p>\n
The injured officers were transported to local hospitals. Officials say all have since been released, although the sergeant remained hospitalized overnight for observation. Everyone involved is expected to recover.<\/p>\n
“This incident was captured on body-worn camera footage and is being investigated by the Force Investigation Division,” Assistant Chief Aneudy Castillo said during a news briefing.<\/p>\n
Police say the suspect was previously arrested in February in connection with a shooting within the same precinct and faces multiple felony charges from that case. Additional charges are now pending in connection with Sunday’s incident.<\/p>\n
The NYPD Force Investigation Division is reviewing the officer-involved shooting.<\/p>\n
