Wilco<\/a> returned to Queens, NY\u2019s Forest Hills Stadium on Saturday night, headlining a fitting Father\u2019s Day-Eve bill given the \u201cDad Rock\u201d tag they have been branded with for almost two decades. While\u00a0most of Wilco\u2019s recent shows have been two-set \u201cevening with\u201d engagements, on this night the group offered an extended set and two encores, with longtime friends Yo La Tengo<\/a> opening the night.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The members\u00a0of Yo La Tengo and Wilco are frequent collaborators. Jeff Tweedy and his bandmates regularly\u00a0join Yo La Tengo during their annual Hanukah runs in New York and they have shared several bills over the years, including a big show at the nearby KeySpan Park in Brooklyn, NY, in 2009. For their hour-long support spot, Yo La Tengo offered some of their most recognizable tunes, beginning\u00a0with the Grateful Dead-referencing \u201cBig Day Coming\u201d and weaving in \u201cStockholm Syndrome,\u201d \u201cOur Way to Fall,\u201d \u201cAutumn Sweater\u201d and several other classics. Singer\/guitarist Ira Kaplan made sure to reference how much he appreciated being near the Mets\u2019 CitiField home turf; the group famously took its name from a story from the baseball club\u2019s inaugural season, when\u00a0Richie Ashburn started saying \u201cyo la tengo\u201d to avoid colliding with the Spanish-speaking Elio Chac\u00f3n.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wilco have been largely sticking to a stock set of songs on their current tour, which includes career-spanning signatures like \u201cI\u2019m Always in Love,\u201d \u201cJesus, Etc.,\u201d \u201cImpossible Germany\u201d and \u201cWar on War,\u201d as well as earlier material like \u201cBox Full of Letters\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s Just That Simple.\u201d Saturday\u2019s show featured all of those tunes and most of their standbys, though things were trimmed to fit the double-bill\u2019s run of show and the venue\u2019s early curfew. Tweedy also made reference to the Knicks\u2019 recent victory, joking that certain \u201ccelebrity row\u201d regulars were in the front section of his show.<\/p>\n

At the start of Wilco\u2019s first encore, a second drum set was rolled onto the stage and, at the beginning of the group\u2019s second encore, the three members of Yo La Tengo\u2013Kapaln,\u00a0Georgia Hubley and James McNew\u2013emerged and started playing \u201cI Heard You Looking,\u201d an artful, shoegazey instrumental from their 1993 album Painful. Soon after, all of Wilco joined them on stage to help out with the tune and the number then gradually segued into an extended version of Wilco\u2019s A Ghost is Born Krautrock classic \u201cSpiders (Kidsmoke)\u201d that featured both bands. The members of Yo La Tengo have performed with Wilco on \u201cSpiders (Kidsmoke)\u201d in the past, though last night marked the first time Wilco had performed \u201cI Heard You Looking\u201d during one of their shows.<\/p>\n

Wilco will kick off their\u00a0Solid Sound Festival in North Adams, MA this Friday. During their first show at the multi-day event, the group will reunite with Billy Bragg to perform music from their landmark Mermaid Avenue albums.\u00a0<\/p>\n
