Police noted that it had been 24 years since a Montreal officer was killed in the line of duty, with the last being Beno\u00eet L\u2019Ecuyer, 29, who was fatally shot on Feb. 28, 2002.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSuch acts have no place here,\u201d Quebec Premier Christine Fr\u00e9chette said of the shooting.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Ian Lafreni\u00e8re, the Minister of Domestic Security, stressed in a press conference late Monday that Montreal is a safe city.<\/p>\n
He also urged the public not to become desensitized by footage of the shooting or to fall for rumors circulating online.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must remember not to become desensitized by this; they are human beings,\u201d Lafreni\u00e8re said.<\/p>\n
Fr\u00e9chette and Montreal Mayor Martinez Ferrada said Quebec and Montreal will fly their flags at half-mast in light of the attack.<\/p>\n
