Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) Matthew Evans is pleased to announce that Mark Asberg has been reappointed Vice-Provost and University Librarian for a five-year term, starting July 1, 2026. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Dr. Asberg has served in the role of Vice-Provost and University Librarian since 2021. During his tenure, he has made considerable contributions and enhancements within the library and taken on the responsibility of transforming the portfolio to include not only the library and archives but also The Agnes Etherington Art Centre, The Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts, and the Queen\u2019s Quarterly. Dr. Asberg has focused on improvements to the portfolio\u2019s organizational structure and has worked to increase administrative and operational integration among the partners working to leverage shared strengths and values to the benefit of Queen\u2019s. Among these contributions, Dr. Asberg has consistently made staff engagement as well as community engagement significant priorities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe library is an integral part of any university, and at Queen\u2019s we are fortunate to have an exceptional system with eight locations across campus where students, faculty, staff, and members of the community connect with information, diverse forms of knowledge, technology, and one another,\u201d says Provost Evans. \u201cDr. Asberg has provided excellent leadership over the past five years, and I am certain he will further advance the library\u2019s mission and foster academic success and innovative research at Queen\u2019s in the years ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n
Under his leadership, the library teams will continue to address changes and challenges within the scholarly publishing ecosystem; make critical digital transformations and focus on AI-related questions and initiatives; reimagine and redevelop library spaces; and prioritize the library\u2019s commitment to Indigenization-Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Anti-Racism, and Accessibility (I-EDIAA). \u00a0<\/p>\n
Prior to joining Queen\u2019s, Dr. Asberg served as chief executive officer of the Calgary Public Library, where he led a team of more than 700 employees in 21 locations across the city. During his tenure, he stewarded initiatives to make the library system more accessible and welcoming to new audiences. Dr. Asberg\u2019s career within the Calgary Public Library system began in 2014 as director of service delivery. He has also served as the manager of Knowledge Resource Service with Alberta Health Services; Team Leader of CRA\u2019s prairie region Knowledge and Research Centres; manager of Information, Research, and Training Services for Alberta Law Libraries; and Crown Counsel Librarian for Alberta Court Libraries.<\/p>\n
