{"id":275010,"date":"2026-06-23T08:44:37","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T08:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/275010\/"},"modified":"2026-06-23T08:44:37","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T08:44:37","slug":"brooklyn-ranks-as-top-large-us-city-for-connected-bike-networks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/275010\/","title":{"rendered":"Brooklyn ranks as top large US city for connected bike networks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Image credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:%27Welcome_to_Brooklyn%27_--_The_Brooklyn_Bridge_(NY)_April_2016_(26847039662).jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wikimedia Commons<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brooklyn has been ranked the number one large city in the US for how well-connected its cycling networks are.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ranking comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peopleforbikes.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PeopleForBikes<\/a>, a bicycle advocacy nonprofit which every year ranks cities for how well their bike networks connect to everyday destinations like jobs, school and healthcare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 2026 City Ratings which evaluated over 3,000 communities in the US, Brooklyn (New York) ranked as the number one \u2018large\u2019 city for bike network connectivity. Minneapolis (Minnesota) followed in second place and  Seattle (Washington) ranked as third. A \u2018large\u2019 city was determined as having a population of more than 300,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grace Stonecipher, PeopleForBikes Infrastructure Analytics and Research Manager, said that the top ranking large cities have several characteristics in common.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLow residential speed limits, dozens of miles of protected bike lanes and off-street paths and a focus on connecting people to jobs, schools and other daily destinations by bike,\u201d Stonecipher told Zag Daily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stonecipher added that the three cities share a \u201csustained commitment to building out complete, connected, low-stress networks, backed by formal bike plans and dedicated funding streams\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat commitment ensures that investment goes towards closing the gaps and increasing connectivity for riders of all ages and abilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s ratings from PeopleForBikes are built on an updated methodology including new census data, revised safety standards and city boundary adjustments. This should be kept in mind when comparing with 2025 ratings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the new standard, 555 US communities scored 50 or higher \u2013 up by more than 230 cities compared with last year. A score of 50 is what PeopleForBikes believes reflects a connected enough bike network to support \u201ceasy, accessible and everyday riding\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brooklyn scored at 70, Minneapolis at 68 and Seattle at 66. Queens (New York) followed at 63 and San Francisco (California) at 61.
