Sumerian\u00a0language\u00a0lacks\u00a0grammatical gender,\u00a0and\u00a0en\u00a0is\u00a0the single word for\u00a0priest\/priestess\u00a0regardless of gender.\u00a0<\/p>\n
These threads weave a society in which women could have been accepted as primary rulers who were backed by divine and earthly authority and buried with resources that reflected\u00a0their status.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
McCaffrey decided to revisit the tombs at Ur after women at\u00a0the\u00a0nearby\u00a0Bronze Age site\u00a0of\u00a0Umm\u00a0el\u00a0Marra\u00a0were unearthed with grave goods traditionally\u00a0considered male, like weapons and men\u2019s headgear.\u00a0The find was a revelation, leading McCaffrey to reconsider the inconsistencies\u00a0Woolley\u00a0noted\u00a0between\u00a0the tombs of elite\u00a0women\u00a0and\u00a0men\u00a0interred\u00a0in the\u00a0royal\u00a0cemetery. As she did\u00a0so, three women stood out:\u00a0Queen Puabi, an unknown queen buried in Royal Tomb 1054, and Queen A-su-sikil-am.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Puabi\u2019s\u00a0claim\u00a0to power is\u00a0the most visible.\u00a0Though\u00a0thousands of\u00a0years of intrusive burials, grave robbing, and environmental wear have\u00a0taken their toll on\u00a0Ur\u2019s\u00a0royal\u00a0cemetery,\u00a0Puabi\u2019s\u00a0tomb is the most opulent one to have survived intact. Woolley described her burial chamber as arrayed with\u00a0\u201can amazing wealth of offerings, vessels of gold, silver, copper, clay, and of such stones as white calcite, steatite, obsidian, and lapis lazuli; silver heads of lionesses from a piece of furniture, gold drinking-tubes, gold saws and chisels, an inlaid game board.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In the burial chamber lay Puabi herself, a petite woman just under five feet tall who died around the age of 40.
