Fresh off the release of its new studio album, BIG MODERN!, the Connecticut quartet returned to New York City to headline two sold-out nights at Madison Square Garden, a venue synonymous with the top of the jam band food chain. Five years ago, Goose was playing to socially distanced crowds a fraction of the size of the 22,000-capacity MSG. Now, it was commanding the World’s Most Famous Arena with a visual production that cemented the band’s ascension to arena-rock status. Yet, what began as a high-energy celebration of a milestone album would ultimately transform into a profound test of the community’s resilience, shadowed by sudden tragedy and salvaged by collective healing.

The energy in Manhattan was already running hot, fueled by the residual celebration of the New York Knicks‘ recent NBA Finals championship. By Thursday, Goose fans had already converged on the city, coming from all over the country and the world, lining up for hours to experience the band’s interactive pop-up shop. Inside the shop in Greenwich Village, the walls were a colorful mosaic of the band’s polarizing rise: bright yellow tiles boasted high praise from fans, while pink tiles were adorned with criticisms from online detractors. The band members even leaned into the joke themselves, with multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach writing a Sharpie response to a critique of his own keyboard skills, noting that he had a lot to work on.

That night, a “Night Zero” benefit concert hosted by fan community The Femme Flock set a tone of unity, raising money for Conscious Alliance and priming the fanbase for the weekend ahead with Natalie Brooke and Sarah Elaz Super Jam.

When Friday night arrived, the interior of Madison Square Garden buzzed. Augmenting the standard touring setup with a massive, newly integrated array of video screens, Goose came on stage to the sound of Knicks highlights from this past championship run. Anspach, Rick Mitarotonda, Trevor Weekz, and Cotter Ellis then launched into a fierce opening “Thatch” followed by an extended version of “Borne.”

The night quickly turned into a showcase for BIG MODERN!, delivering the live debuts of the ’80s-inspired “POP,” followed immediately by the triptych of “Savenger,” “(you are here),” and “((savengersspell)).” Goose found its voice on “Seekers on the Ridge Parts 1 & II,” where Mitarotonda’s guitar solos effortlessly filled the massive room, solidifying the band’s place on one of music’s biggest stages.

Set two welcomed dynamic multi-instrumentalist and frequent NYC guest Stuart Bogie, whose woodwinds added a rich, Dave Matthews Band-esque texture to “Into the Myst” and BIG MODERN! lead single, “Good2B.” A rare “Elmeg the Wise” drew a collective roar from the hardcore faithful, before a jamtronic reimagining of “The Empress of Organos” jam closed the set in a blissful dance party. Goose closed out the encore with a powerful version of Jim James’ “State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U)” before sending fans out into the streets of New York City.

Goose — “State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” (Jim James) — 6/19/26
[Video: Jonny Lee]

Saturday night began with the band fully shaking off any lingering arena nerves. Bogie joined the lineup from the first note, anchoring a horn-infused rendition of the Talking Heads-style track “MEDIA” and a blistering, 18-minute “Hot Tea.” The improvisational peak of the set arrived early via a dark, exploratory “Rockdale” and a massive, 22-minute “Slow Ready” that became a driving electronic jam. But during intermission, the atmosphere inside the arena shifted.

Medical and security personnel scrambled into the arena’s lower bowl. For those remaining in the bowl, the unfolding medical emergency brought an immediate, sobering chill over the celebratory weekend. Set break stretched on for an uncomfortable hour as staff cleared rows to attend to the crisis. When the band finally returned to the stage, the gravity of the situation hung heavily in the air, though many in the venue were still unaware of the tragic outcome.

It’s unclear whether the band was aware of the situation in the bowl, but when Goose came back out, the band delivered a near-30-minute “Arrow” and soaring, Bogie-assisted “Fish in the Sea” that turned the crowd’s attention back to the stage—at least for the time being. The band then dropped back into BIG MODERN!, guiding the crowd through the metal-tinged peaks of the title track and the live debut of “Good Times // End Times.” Yet, as thousands of fans poured out onto the streets, the brilliant musicianship was overshadowed by the devastating news spreading through the community: a fellow fan, 51-year-old father of two Paul Kueker, had fallen to his death at intermission.

By Sunday morning, the weekend’s narrative had entirely rewritten itself. A celebratory run had turned into a period of communal mourning. Goose was scheduled to play a highly anticipated, intimate third show at the 5,000-capacity SummerStage in Central Park.

Shortly before doors opened, the band issued a statement on social media, acknowledging the collective heartbreak and providing mental health resources, including partnerships with NAMI-NYC and the Western Sun Foundation. Goose explained its decision to proceed with the concert by stating that the best thing it could do was bring the community together to lean on one another and offer a space for healing. Inside the venue, a lone bouquet of red roses rested on the stage in front of Mitarotonda’s microphone.

At 6:30 p.m., the band walked out. Anspach took the microphone to deliver a prepared speech, gently urging fans to look out for one another and lean on the community, before leading the audience in a profound moment of absolute silence; a rare occurrence at a concert, entirely devoid of chatter. Mitarotonda then stepped up, softly dedicating the evening to Kueker, and struck the opening chords to “This Old Sea.” Rarely utilized in this set position, the song served as the perfect, heavy-hearted opener. The refrain “Oh my child, worry no further, lay your burden on me” hit especially hard on the Kueker childrens’ first Father’s Day without their dad.

The healing process continued through a cathartic “Same Old Shenanigans,” as the song comforted the crowd with the reminder “don’t let a heavy one / hold back / the dawn in you.” Slowly, the music began to lift the fog. By the time the band closed the first set with a high-energy “Yeti,” smiles began returning to the faces on the lawn.

A second-set pairing of “Hungersite” and “Dripfield” followed by a haunting, beautifully extended “Jed Stone” paved the way for a dark, improvisational “Madhuvan.” With the venue’s curfew fast approaching, Goose bypassed the traditional encore break entirely, with Anspach checking his watch as the band launched into “Give It Time.” As the final notes of the guitar solo soared over Central Park, thousands of voices sang along in unison.

The weekend had not been the triumphant celebration the band had planned, but it proved something far more enduring. In the face of sudden tragedy, this community showed its ability to find strength, hold each other up, and process grief together through music.

Check out photos of Goose in NYC by photographer Garrett Dorfman, along with fan-shot videos.
