{"id":27577,"date":"2025-11-03T23:35:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T23:35:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/27577\/"},"modified":"2025-11-03T23:35:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T23:35:11","slug":"nyc-shootings-plummet-to-all-time-low-as-does-subway-crime-for-october","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/27577\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC shootings plummet to all-time low &#8212; as does subway crime for October"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Big Apple shootings have plummeted to all-time lows so far this year, the NYPD said Monday \u2014 as subway crime in October also tied the month\u2019s record low in 2020, when the city was a pandemic ghost town.<\/p>\n<p>There were 744 people shot in 596 incidents in the Big Apple between January and October, breaking the previous record low set in 2018 when 768 people were shot in 641 incidents, the department said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not just beating the record,<a href=\"http:\/\/Shootings in the Big Apple have plummeted to all-time lows so far this year, the NYPD said Monday \u2014 as cops also touted the safest October in the subways since 2020, when the city was a  pandemic ghost town.\" rel=\"nofollow\"> we are crushing it<\/a>,\u2019\u2019 Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at Monday\u2019s graduation ceremony for new recruits.<\/p>\n<p>Shootings in the Big Apple so far this year have plummeted to historic lows, the NYPD said Monday. LP Media<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t luck or coincidence \u2014 it\u2019s the direct result of our precision policing strategy and the relentless work of the men and women of the NYPD who carry out this plan and make our city safer,\u201d the top cop said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese historic public safety milestones are reaching every corner of New York City, and I thank Mayor Adams for his continuous support of the NYPD.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The number of murders in the city so far this year also tied a 2018 all-time low record, with 18 homicides reported \u2014 or nearly half of the 35 killings investigated by the NYPD for the same period last year, police said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last month also set record lows for transit crime.<\/p>\n<p>There were 154 felony offenses reported on the rails in October, tying the previous record for the month set in 2020, when ridership hit historic lows during the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The subway crime stats for each of those years included a single murder.<\/p>\n<p>Last month\u2019s sole subway slaying<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/18\/us-news\/shock-and-denial-felt-by-family-of-murdered-grandfather\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> involved the senseless beating death<\/a> of Italian immigrant Nicola Tanzi, 64, who was suddenly attacked by a psycho inside the Jay Street-MetroTech station. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In October 2020, there <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/10\/03\/man-fatally-stabbed-during-dispute-on-subway-platform-in-nyc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was a deadly knifing<\/a> of a 20-year-old man during a clash with a stranger on the J\/Z train platform at Chambers Street, police said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said of the new stats, \u201cWe are crushing it.\u201d Kyle Mazza\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>Last month also set record lows for transit crime, with 154 felony offenses reported on the rails in October. Matthew McDermott<\/p>\n<p>The other subway crimes that occurred last month involved 47 felony assaults, 69 grand larcenies, 36 robberies and one burglary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, there were 38 felony assaults, 74 grand larcenies, 41 robberies and no burglaries in the city\u2019s underground, statistics show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, overall hate crimes citywide also dipped 22 percent last month over the same period in 2024 \u2014 with 47 bias-related offenses tallied so far this year compared to 60 last year, police said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Only anti-Asian hate crimes increased in October \u2014 with four such incidents reported thanks to the random one-man hate crime spree allegedly <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/30\/us-news\/nutjob-with-86-arrests-slugs-stranger-onto-nyc-subway-tracks-in-terrifying-anti-asian-spree-sources\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carried out by a madman<\/a> with several dozen prior arrests in Lower Manhattan last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The majority of the hate crimes last month targeted Jewish victims \u2014 reflecting a trend seen in the city since Hamas\u2019 attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>This month\u2019s record low in subway crime tied the previous record set in 2020, when ridership hit historic lows during the COVID-19 pandemic.
