WASHINGTON,\u00a0D.C..\u00a0\u2013\u00a0There are\u00a0a handful of\u00a0high-stakes\u00a0primaries in\u00a0New\u00a0York\u2019s congressional races.\u00a0Democrats face crowded primary races in districts\u00a010, 12 and 13\u00a0that cover\u00a0New\u00a0York\u00a0City.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0the new\u00a0Mayor\u2019s political influence\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0being tested today in some of these races.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAll of these are very safe\u00a0Democratic\u00a0seats\u00a0so you\u00a0gotta\u00a0believe whoever wins the\u00a0Democratic primary\u00a0is a shoe in for the general election,\u201d said Dr. Todd Belt,\u00a0professor\u00a0and director of political management program at George Washington\u00a0University.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In the\u00a0Hudson\u00a0Valley, a\u00a0competitive\u00a0democratic race to challenge\u00a0Republicnan\u00a0incumbent\u00a0Rep. Mike\u00a0Lawler\u00a0(R- NY).\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cHe won very closely in 2022 and better in\u00a02024,\u00a0but\u00a0Democrats think this is a\u00a0likely flip\u00a0for them,\u201d said Dr. Belt.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
While these primaries are expensive, they are not the most expensive primary races\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0seen so far this year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cFor this one\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not so much how much money is coming in, it\u2019s\u00a0where it\u2019s\u00a0coming from,\u201d said Dr. Belt. \u201cAnd\u00a0of course AIPAC is\u00a0getting a tarnished reputation among\u00a0Democrats\u00a0and also\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a lot of AI corporate money coming in as well and there\u00a0are people who are\u00a0taking strong positions on regulation of AI so\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0less than the amount but more of who is taking from whom.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
NYC\u2019s\u00a0new progressive\u00a0Mayor\u00a0Zohran\u00a0Mamdani\u2019s political capital is also on the line by backing progressive candidates in the 10th\u00a0and 13th\u00a0districts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Republicans currently hold a small majority in the\u00a0House with some seats vacant. Democrats are hoping to retake control of the\u00a0House\u00a0but\u00a0redistricting could jeopardize their\u00a0chances.\u00a0Political scientists said\u00a0the\u00a0party that is\u00a0not in\u00a0control typically makes some gains in the midterms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
