Mike Lawler in the battle for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/new-york-17th-congressional-district-mike-lawler-beth-davidson-cait-conley\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New York&#8217;s 17th Congressional District<\/a>, after winning Tuesday&#8217;s primary, CBS News projects.<\/p>\n<p>Not long after being projected as the winner, Conley told her supporters the campaign was &#8220;a fight for our families, for our communities, and for our country,&#8221; later adding, &#8220;I truly do not have words for the tremendous amount of gratitude I have for folks in this room, and all across the district.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Conley worked on the National Security Council in the Biden administration as director of counterterrorism. She previously served in the U.S. Army and was deployed overseas six times.<\/p>\n<p>Some of her <a href=\"https:\/\/caitconley.com\/policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">campaign promises<\/a> include lowering housing costs, increasing affordable childcare and expanding affordable healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s about trust that someone is going to fight for working families, for our country, and for the values that define America,&#8221; Conley said.<\/p>\n<p>The 17th Congressional District encompasses many of New York City&#8217;s northern suburbs, including  all of Rockland and Putnam counties and parts of Westchester and Dutchess counties.<\/p>\n<p>The other names on the primary ballot were Beth Davidson, a Rockland County legislator; Effie Phillips-Stanley, a Tarrytown village trustee; John Cappello, an Air Force veteran; and Mike Sacks, a former lawyer and television reporter.<\/p>\n<p>Previous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/polls\/new-york-us-house-17-polls-2026.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">polling<\/a>\u00a0showed Conley and Davidson as the frontrunners.<\/p>\n<p>NY-17 is a complicated swing district. It has far more Democrats than Republicans in terms of registered voters. But Lawler has held the seat since 2023.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump endorsed Lawler in May during a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/president-trump-rockland-county-mike-lawler\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">visit to Rockland County<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump won the county in 2024, garnering far more votes than Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton, who won in 2020 and 2016, respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n          More from CBS News\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"content__tags__label\">In:<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Democrat Cait Conley, a former national cybersecurity expert, will challenge Republican Rep.
