A Bronx teen who was shot by police after striking an NYPD sergeant with a stolen car<\/a> was charged with attempted murder from his hospital bed \u2014 and it\u2019s the second attempted murder rap the teen\u2019s accrued in less than five months, cops said.<\/p>\n

Jayden Mendoza, 18, was charged Tuesday as he recuperated from a gunshot wound to his arm at St. Barnabas Hospital<\/a>, according to law enforcement. He was taken into police custody Sunday, shortly after striking the officer with the stolen Kia Sportage.<\/p>\n

Mendoza hit the sergeant and two other cops during a wild getaway attempt while out on bail for shooting a 24-year-old man inside an apartment building in the Morris Heights section of the Bronx on Jan. 24, cops said.<\/p>\n

Prior to the shooting, the teen suspect had been arguing with the older man in a hallway at the building, near Nelson Ave. and Brandt Place, shortly after 2 p.m., when, as the dispute turned physical, Mendoza drew a firearm and opened fire, said police.<\/p>\n

Mendoza was arrested Feb. 9 for that shooting and charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a loaded firearm and assault, court documents show. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment.<\/p>\n

The sergeant he allegedly struck during the failed getaway was hospitalized with leg injuries but released Monday, Mayor Mamdani said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thanked him for his service and wished him a full and speedy recovery,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cMy thoughts are with the sergeant, his loved ones, his fellow officers, and every one affected by this terrible incident.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also arrested was Angel Robles, 20, a passenger who was riding in Mendoza\u2019s car when the teen slammed into the cop. He was charged Monday after police got a search warrant and found a loaded Glock .22-caliber handgun with an extended magazine in the back of the stolen Kia, police said.<\/p>\n

Two other officers were treated for minor injuries suffered when the driver rammed into their police vehicle.<\/p>\n

Police said an alert was issued when the Kia, stolen Saturday in the Bronx, passed a Washington Heights license plate reader at 5:35 p.m. Sunday.<\/p>\n

Ten minutes later, another alert went off as the Kia headed over the University Heights Bridge and into the Bronx, where police tracked the car from above, with officers from the Aviation Unit, and on the street, with officers from the Community Response Team in unmarked cars.<\/p>\n

After dropping off a woman, the driver stopped a second time and was surrounded by six unmarked police cars on E. Fordham Road near Webster Ave. in Fordham, police said.<\/p>\n

Instead of surrendering, the driver tried to escape, putting the car in reverse and striking at least one police vehicle, then putting it back in drive and hitting the sergeant, who was already out of his vehicle, police said.<\/p>\n

An officer who had jumped atop his police vehicle to avoid getting hit, then fired through the Kia\u2019s windshield, striking the driver and allowing other officers to jump in and arrest him and Robles, police said.<\/p>\n
