The MTA is launching a public awareness campaign warning motorists that in just days, the agency will activate speed cameras at active construction zones at certain bridges and tunnels throughout the city.<\/p>\n
They say the goal is to reduce crashes and keep road workers safe. <\/p>\n
People in Marine Park, like Melody Robles, say speeding is an issue near the Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe speeding is horrible over here. There\u2019s no way to cross the road safely over here,” said Robles. <\/p>\n

Bronx-Whitestone Bridge <\/p>\n
Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge <\/p>\n
Henry Hudson Bridge <\/p>\n
Hugh L. Carey Tunnel <\/p>\n
Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge <\/p>\n
Queens Midtown Tunnel <\/p>\n
Robert F. Kennedy Bridge <\/p>\n
Throgs Neck Bridge <\/p>\n
Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge <\/p>\n
The MTA says that in 2023, 900 people were killed and 40,000 were injured in work zones across the country. <\/p>\n
The MTA says in the first phase, warnings will be issued. The second phase will start later this year and fines will be issued. Violations will start at $50 for the first offense, and $75 for the second offense, if within 18 months of the first violation. People with three or more violations will be fined $100 for each subsequent offense, if within 18 months of the first violation. <\/p>\n
Isaiah Nesbitt says he’s skeptical the enforcement will be effective. <\/p>\n
\u201cPeople are going to break the law anyways. They\u2019re gonna do what they wanna do. But maybe it\u2019ll discourage a couple people,” said Nesbitt.<\/p>\n
The MTA claims the program already has results statewide, with a majority of workers reporting they feel safer at sites where this is enforced.<\/p>\n
